Many employers can't really tell if an institution is a diploma mill.

"Some San Antonio firefighters who got burned for having degrees from questionable colleges are now fighting to keep the extra pay they got from those degrees.

Any San Antonio firefighter who earns a college degree gets paid several hundred dollars more per month. Some firefighters found a short cut by getting online degrees from places like Suffield University and Lacrosse University. "

From the article: "When the fire department renegotiates the collective bargaining agreement with firefighters later this year, it plans to re-write the section regarding incentive pay to protect your tax dollars from paying for degrees that did not require any time inside an actual classroom."

The wording seems to suggest that degrees earned outside an actual classroom, that is to say via distance learning, would become ineligible as well. Perhaps one of the distinguished posters on this forum should contact the San Antonio Fire Department.

It seems, to me, that it's unfair to award someone a pay rise when they get any old college degree then change the rules afterwards and expect the money back, together with pay cuts.

The firefighters in question didn't earn college degrees, they bought worthless pieces of paper.

They conspired to defraud the system and some did it knowingly others were innosent or golable victims.

And the real DL schools do get bad rep because of mills.
Because of such incedents On Line degree will be labeled as second rate or millish.

This is were training of HR personel comes in to play, because with the cclick of the mouse they can verify schools accreditation and status. So the HR is to be blamed and maybe repremented for accepting and not verifying the degrees.
