    Re: details

You're saying nothing was filed? There was no discovery? No one hearing? No transcripts of anything?

Yes. Exactly. That's what I'm talking about... and asking. Okay, I didn't follow the case well enough to know if there was a trial or not, but I can't believe that it got to the point of the settlement that it did without leaving a nice, juicy paper trail full of information that authorities could use.

Or am I wrong, in this case? It's been known to happen, you know... me being wrong I mean. Three, four times, that I can remember. I thought, once, that it was five or six times... but I was wrong. ;)

It brings me great joy when anyone who bilks the public is caught -- whether or not others are doing the same -- whether or not it goes anywhere. I'd like to get them all, but this is a start.

    It made me smile.

    Re: Yippee!!

And once they are all in prison who is next?
Maybe they should consult with politburo.
    Or the pentagon lawyers.

Any action taken to reduce the fraud is good but WHY OUR BORDERS are UNPROTECTED?

I would feel better if the Secret Service arrested the pentagon lawers for trason. They could have stopped Sept 11 from happening; military was going to have FBI involved they had Muhamad Atta.

Well let them chaise diploma mills that’s important to
wile alkaida is crossing the border and setting camps in USA.

Our enemy within, the Leninist liberal lawyers in the government and media, arew the one should be arrested.

    Let Police handle mill crime.
Secret service can do even gather things like protect this country from Liberal Lawyers - Politburo appointed by Clintons.

My point is that maybe SS can be utilized in more eargent issues facing our country. Diploma mills are very low on the list of priorities.

It is great to see the Feds involved taking their jobs seriously and going after these frauds. I hope they get serious jail time to persuade others not to follow. I wonder what other institutions will be next Breyer State? PWU? I wonder how may of the posters at "Jamesville" and degreeboards are actual degree mill owners and operators? It is sad to see the untrue garbage they post although clearly very few are fooled by it.

    An implosion of web domains

There are many web domains that appear to be associated with the operators of the now-defunct Saint Regis University. One particular IP address holding a number of them is the XO Communications address 66.236.28.61. I have the impression that nearly all of them are managed by the same folks who incurred the wrath of Regis University some months ago.

There are also a number of SRU-associated domains that had held IP addresses in the range 216.171.215.83 - 216.171.215.90, 216.171.215.102 - 216.171.215.107, and then various IPs scattered between 216.171.215.159 and 216.171.218.119. There are other IPs, of course.

In a change of status relative to things last week, many of them are no longer on the air.

The Robertstown site www.robertstownuniversity.ac is still up, with its discontinuation-of-program notice. The James Monroe site jamesmonroeuniversity.ac is down. The Saint Regis site has been off the air for a few months, of course. The NBOE site www.nationalboardedu.com is gone. The Panama Canal University site http://panamacanaluniversity.edu.dept.cc is gone.

The University Services site www.university-services.net is still on the air, as is http://advancedu.org/ which still shows the title "The only legitimate source for ACCREDITED College Degree and High School Diploma Programs. Graduate in just days!" The ACAC credential evaluator site www.acacorp.org is still up. The IEA credential evaluator site www.educationassessment.com is down, as is the CCEA site www.collegecreditassessors.org .The AIEA site www.associea.org is still up. The "Journal of the Association of Online Universities" site www.jaou.net is down.

Good, 'cause you were sure startin' to sound kinda' pro-mill (or at least highly sympathetic thereto) for a minute, there... which, given your history around here, would not have been a good thing. You know I'm slowly-but-surely becoming a Lerner fan, don't you? Seriously... your posts lately (or at least the ones that I've had time to read) indicate that you finally get it; and so I, who used to be one of your biggest critics, am now likin' you more and more all the time. So don't screw it up!

;) (Just screwin' around... er... well... you know... sort of.)

While what you're saying (er... well... actually "writing") may well be true about who controls what, a certain amount of caution in jumping to such conclusions is appropriate when it comes to which domain names are or might be hooked to which IP addresses and, moreover, who actually controls what. Because of the shortage of IP addresses, unless a web site needs to utilize the secure socket layer (SSL) or uses some other application or utility that absolutely requires a unique IP address, ARIN dictated to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) long ago that all web sites on a given server should share said server's main web-associated IP address. In other words, unless there's a compelling reason for a given web site to have its own, unique IP address, one shouldn't be issued thereto... even if the web site owner requests (or even demands) it.

That means that all manner of web sites owned by all manner of different people/companies who don't even know each other, but whose web sites just happen to be on the same physical web server, will all share the same IP address. So scanning a server and its IP address for all the domain names it hosts and which are, therefore, associated with said IP address may not be a valid way of determining what domain names are associated with, and/or are owned, and/or are controlled by whom.

That said, who knows... maybe you know something we don't and, in fact, all those domains are controlled somehow by (or are associated with) the nefarious St. Regis bunch. But that's the thing... you'd have to know something more than just what domains are hooked to a given IP address to make that determination and/or come to that conclusion. If, for example, all the domains hooked to a given IP address were registered to the same person(s) and/or companies, well, then, that would be just the sort of "something more" that I'm talking about; and, in that case, yes, one could say that they're all associated with one another and/or run by the same people.

I've placed web sites for churches or pro-life groups on the same physical servers as atheist or pro-choice groups... all sharing the same IP address. Clearly, they have nothing to do with one another, yet they're on the same server sharing the same IP address; and would all have their domain names returned in a revers DNS search or server domain scan. In that case, it would be wrong to assume that they all share common ownership or are all controlled by the same folks.

Now, all that having been said, wouldn't it just be a hoot if, in fact, the St. Regis bunch were also operating web sites with domain names like All-fetish.us or Toysintwats.com! And that would make some sense, too, since it requires pretty much the same knuckleheaded, bereft-of-decency sensibilities to run porn sites that would be required to run diploma mill sites... which, of course, is galanga's well-taken point.

If all those sites really are controlled by the St. Regis folks, galanga, then I apologize for challenging it. All I'm saying is that if all you did was scan the server and/or do reverse DNS to see which domains reside thereon; and if you know little more about it than the results of said scans and/or reverse DNS, then it may or may not actually be true that the St. Regis folks -- lowlifes that they, of course, are -- own and/or control all those domains.

    I'm just sayin'

It's thrilling to see some diploma mill operators go down. And while some justice might be served, it does nothing to combat the diploma mill industry. The slack will be taken up by someone else.

If you want to put a stop to this, you'll have to address demand, not supply. And the demand for these things is based on a very simple fact: they work. People get away with using diploma mill credentials. Until employers and the public raise their awareness, until they raise their standards, diploma mills will thrive.

This is the ugly little fact about my dissertation results that the denizens of Jamesville conveniently leave out. They tout the results of unaccredited schools, state approval, etc. But they ignore the fact that those levels (of unaccredited schools' forms of recognition, specifically) drop when employers are given a little bit of information.

If the media would publicize--heavily--the existence of diploma mills, it would be like irridating them. It would render them useless.

Until then, someone will step right up to replace these folks. And so it goes......

I would like to see employers and admissions committees paying more attention to HOW a degree was earned, rather than to the diploma itself.

This would have the added benefit of exposing the weaker accredited institutions as well as the worthless ones in the unaccredited category.

I thank the reality is that this is very similiar to the illegal drug trade. Our society is never going to concentrate on it enough to eliminate 90+% of it. That said it is still nice to see some of the fraudsters and criminals go down. It makes the world just a little more right. What would the opposing view be? That it is OK to cheat and steal from people and employers? That by being trusting those people deserve to be taken advantage of? Not to me, but I guess there are lots of people at Degreeboards and "Jamesville" that would see it just that way.

  18. DesElms

    DesElms New Member

I just assumed he meant "irradiating." No?

But accreditation saves employers and admissions committees from having to make those inquiries and perform that kind of due diligence. It's accreditation's whole point... or at least one of the main ones. If it's accredited, and if accreditation is to mean anything, shouldn't we all be regarding accredited degrees as worthwhile on their face?

By my agreement with Rich, I, for one, never meant to suggest that I think we should give up the good fight just because it's probably unwinnable. Eternal vigilance is called for. We can't keep them all off the wall, but if we don't at least keep enough of them off so that the ones that get by can be handled by the posted sentires, then none of us can sleep.
