Doesn't sound like a diploma mill was in play. Sounds like just claimed fake degrees. This is actually very common and much harder to catch than diploma mills.

Any of us can jump on LinkedIn and search for known mill degrees and find us some fakers. We cannot, however, distinguish the real Harvard alumni from the people who just claim to be.

Some colleges really take privacy protections to the extreme, as well. I know of at least one well known college that routinely refuses to honor degree verification requests even with the consent of the student. Their position is firmly in the "can neither confirm nor deny" camp.

And if you think about it, people lie about elite school degrees all the time. But how many do you think are smart enough to dial that back a bit?

Claiming to have a JD and an MBA from Harvard is an obvious move for a faker. But would anyone really question my Associates from the University of Scranton? What if I claimed to have an MBA from Chadron State College?

This wasn't someone who just hung up a shingle claiming to be a psychologist. This is someone who got a job at a practice where they evidently did no credentialing. A simple search of the state website would have revealed she wasn't licensed. The only potential situation I could imagine where maybe the practice had been duped would be that they hired her intentionally as being "license eligible" and had her working under the supervision of a licensed psychologist.

Even then, shame on them for not verifying the degrees.
