Yes, I am attending SMU via distance. I think they had distance learning since 1997.

Note that ellisuonline.com was temporary... it now forwards to ellis.edu.

Ya know...I like Ellis. I really, really do. They have a masters program I would LOVE to take after I finish my BA at AJU. But, at more than $600 per credit hour, they are just much, much too expensive. I could enroll in a graduate program at a UK school and spend far less money, even with the unfavorable currency exchange rate.

As some of you know, I am an Email writing nut when it comes to colleges and most of the time I can get somethings done. For example when my writing campaign got TESC to change the price of the TECEP Exams for military and so on.. Well I am at it again but with Ellis College or now known as just NYIT-Ellis branch:)

I will start a new thread for this since its a different subject, take a look!!

Will NYIT retain any DL programs after the split with Ellis?

Actually Bruce they have had Blended programs for a while. That included distance learning classes taught by NYIT professors for the Day students.

However, I do not believe in the short run that NYIT will have 100% online programs. Eventually, IMO they will comeback to DL but I think the Ellis University/Ellis College thing pissed them off.

Who starts an online program, runs it for a few years then shuts it down? Why would any online college break its ties with a school like NYIT. NYIT gave them real credibility, fast. And that gave Ellis College an excuse to charge the ridiculous tuition they were charging. I believe Ellis U will TRY to charge these prices too, we will have to see how that goes..

    I just don't understand... I'm just glad I'll be a NYIT Graduate!

You get what you pay for IMO... Harvard is obviously more expensive than USC, but there are clear differences. I'm currently going for the MA in Communications Advertising/PR from Ellis and I'm telling you, the technology is top-notch. There are some crappy online eLearning schools out there. While they may be accredited, the system they have in place sometimes is horrible and makes learning very difficult. Ellis has been an excellent experience and I am having a great time.

Now you can be an Alumni of NYIT too..

They just included Ellis on the application!

I like the way Ellis conducts online education as well. The classes are enjoyable!

True, and that is called future planning on my part. Alums from Ellis have been setting up their profiles since Friday, hence I have been getting email after email thanking me for getting into this campaign. And in a year I'll be happy too-

Fairly soon you will be able to get an NYIT.EDU email address as well. This will open you up to access all of NYIT's online student services. Something many are happy about, and I'm one of them. NYIT has lots of resources and services Ellis students could use, and until we get that account will not be able to access them.

An email account may seem small but in the larger picture it's a pretty big deal.

    Take care

Has anyone taken a good look at the Ellis website?

I can't find ANY information about who is on their faculty. The only administrators, faculty or staff mentioned specifically by name is their president.

No catalog or schedule of classes or academic policies? The curricula for the couple of degree programs I looked at looks reasonable but I would expect a lot more information to be on the website of an RA university.

Personally, I think online schools are hard-pressed to explain why they need to charge more than $600 per credit hour. Speaking of Harvard, one COULD take courses through Harvard extension school and pay LESS than what Ellis charges. Of course, schools need to earn money to continue operating, but to charge so much for an online course, with limited access to instructors, is ridiculous.

Like I said, I do like the look of Ellis' programs, but I'm afraid they have priced themselves out of the market for most DL students.

My point exactly, they LACK in the information department. My ESO said the same thing you did in your post when she looked at the ELLIS site trying to find the information she needed to pay for my classes. At one point she said "this college is not accredited!" It is UNDER NYIT but they never gave me that information when I was recruited. All the military TA filing goes through NYIT directly.

Don't get me wrong, I love the college but I hate having to do the leg work the college should have done in the first place.

Do a Google on "Ellis College Reviews" and you'll see it for yourself, this is nothing new for Ellis.

I could not agree more. That is why a year ago a decided to not go with Ellis. They were charging way to much.

Now as a military student I only pay $250 per credit! That was the only way I would have gone to this college. :)

Years ago (2003-05) I worked at Cardean/Ellis. I was there in an administrative role when Cardean first merged with NYIT to form Ellis.

The people that started Cardean (NA) wanted to become RA so that they could expand more rapidly. They really thought they were going to become U of Phoenix in a matter of years, if not months. When they realized how long it takes to become RA (especially for an online school several years ago), they looked for a merger with an RA school. NYIT needed a boost in enrollment and cash; Cardean needed RA. Boom. A match was made.

Problems emerged immediately, though, since the Cardean folks (in Chicago) were used to doing their own thing, making their own rules, creating their own programs, etc. Now they were under NYIT's academic guidance, plus all the rules and restrictions that come with being eligible for federal financial aid, etc. It was a rough, ROUGH transition, particularly on the academic side.

By the time I left in 2005, it was clear that it wasn't a relationship that was going to last for the long haul. It was a marriage of convenience, and once Ellis was able to get their own RA, there was no need to stay together.

Ellis might struggle on their own for a while, and NYIT will feel the burn of re-starting their own online programs, but I think they will both be happy to be out of the marriage.

Sucks for the students, though. I have two friends still at Ellis (employees), and for the first time in the 6 years I've known about the place, it really sounds like things were going well.

Really, wow it was such a short marriage and one that seemed well suited to one another.

It was hard for me in the first place to understand how two command structures like Cardean and NYIT would work "well" together. I guess they couldn't.

Lot's of the people I attend with at EC-NYIT that are in my various Ellis groups are sad to see the split, as am I. I am just glad NYIT is taking care of us remaining students and giving us full NYIT access and privileges.

I think Ellis University may do ok though, it has a great platform (from what I have seen) and the Ellis name is not unknown, so we will have to see where it goes.

Thanks for the inside scoop on beginnings of Ellis College of NYIT!!
