My quote----Dr. O'Conner can look down his pointy nose at distance learning and call cops with street cred and an MS "interlopers"........(note the MS....meaning only a MS degree)

His quote---..."those only holding a Masters degree..."

    I did.

He wrote of some undefined with Master's degrees and not LEOs with Master's degrees.

A more constructive approach to this would be for, perhaps, Bruce to contact the guy to inform him of how his short guide is being perceived by some LEOs. That would certainly be better than reading all LEO angst into his writing.

That makes sense. It does sound like a LEO with an MS would be an "interloper" from this guy's view...which perhaps is how it is intended. It seems he lumped everyone with "only" an MS into one catagory.

I'm serious about contacting him. He's elicited a negative reaction from some of the LEOs here and I'm guessing that was not his intent.

    Okay...I volunteer Bruce.

Are you sure that wasn't his intent though?:D

Good to see you have that volunteering thing down. :)

I'm still working on DesElms so I'll not yet wager on O'Connor. But if we're to assume anything they why not that he's more...uh...friend than foe?

    Thanks!

I like to think I'm pretty thick-skinned, but it seems pretty clear to me that Dr. O'Connor views anyone without a Doctorate in CJ as an "interloper". I guess, in his reality, real-world experience doesn't count for anything.

My point exactly. I don't think it was an oversight on the good doctors behalf....I think the slight was intended.

After all, doctors don't make mistakes...just ask them.

    Hi all:

I just emailed Tom O'Conner and he said that he has indeed never been a cop. Also, if you read his blog on CJ education it becomes quite apparent that what he describes as interlopers is merely a call for the autonomy of criminal justice departments in colleges.

I've been a cop since 1977 and love the profession, the culture and the practitioners. The fact of the matter is that we've gotten many GREAT ideas and theories from academics who have never been near a cruiser. Look to Toch, Kelling and Wilson as examples of this.

Dr. Tom O'Conner is a dedicated teacher, a fine scholar and has gone to a lot of trouble to create a valuable Internet resource for anyone interested in criminal justice. Even if you don't agree with some of his opinions he still deserves a nod of thanks.

    Thanks for listening.
