Does Rush Limbaugh accurately represent conservatism?

MC, I get what you're saying but that's like saying "maybe we should pass an asshole law so that we can simply lock up all assholes despite the Constitutionality, ethical, moral or financial implications" (of course I exaggerate but you get my point). The problem with drug laws is that like prohibition, it's costing hundreds of billions of dollars to taxpayers, it is militarizing the police and basically undermines civil liberties at every turn. Add to this that there is no "victory" to be had at the end of all this misery and you just have to stand back and ask yourself "why"...why do we do this to ourselves?

My grandfather was a missionary in Brazil for 14 years before they had a "drug problem". The funny thing was, back then you could go into the druggist and purchase cocaine, right off the shelf, sitting next to the aspirin and LOTS of people used it for everything from headaches to lack of energy (Red Bull anyone?) to erectile dysfunction (I have no idea if this works but it seemed to be a popular use). There was also widespread use of marijuana though generally weed was considered a "poor man's" cigarette and you did not see it used by anyone of "class" publicly. Guess what? They didn't have cartels, drug violence, prison riots or a prison population the size of a small nation. Fast forward to today where you have an American style (and largely American funded) war on drugs and now you have all of those problems. Prohibition of drugs...in a country where our prescriptions are more powerful than anything nature can throw at us and used daily by all ages, and you have not only hypocrisy of the highest order but it is guaranteed not to work.

As to the OP, I am not a “Conservative” though my friends think I am (I have liberal friends). What I am is a Libertarian and the more I research our Constitution, etc. the more I see Libertarian beliefs align with our forefathers original intentions for this country. I think Rush Limbaugh is a mouth piece for a corporatist Republican party who has bastardized the term “Conservative”. They are “Conservative” only on some matters of policy like abortion, other than that the difference between Democrat and Republican in this country is very slim with the exception of SOME Democrats such as Obama, who I believe to be a statist in every regard.
Funny but I somehow tend to believe that if you “err” on the side of granting more liberty instead of less, you are more likely to build something meaningful, lasting and that benefits everyone. This is why I hate phrases like “there ought to be a law”. We have attempted to legislate every aspect of life, from things that frighten us to things that merely annoy us (like cities passing ordinances on sagging pants) and it’s just wrong and unsustainable. There should be fewer laws, more accountability, more civil liberty and every man and woman working in the government should view defending the Constitution as their business and quit doing whatever the hell they want and let the courts decide if it was Constitutional or not. The biggest change in the U.S. in the last hundred years is (in my opinion) that the people in the Executive and Legislative branches at all levels of government view the interpretation and application of the Constitution to be a function of the Judicial System alone and no longer seem to pay attention to their oath of office in regards to the Constitution.

    (Stepping off my soapbox now)

I've never listened to him. What's the appeal? And conversely, does he just lie about everything all the time? I rarely see anyone dispute what he says. Is that because he just talks about BS all the time? I don't get him nor do I get the intense hate from (obviously) non-listeners ^^^^^see above.

I wouldn't call the man an idiot. He's made a fortune pissing liberals off and energizing the Republican base, most independents don't seem to pay much attention to him. I mean there is clearly an audience for what he say/does. Don't disparage the man for finding a way to monetize that. Come on liberals, your Messiah will tell you Rush didn't make that, someone else made his success happen. He owes it all to your stupidity, without it he would have nothing to rant about.

Yes, or rather more specifically I meant people who are in prison solely for nonviolent drug offenses. Unless one thinks that both George W. Bush and Barack Obama should have done time for using marijuana and cocaine, then anything else is hypocritical.

By the by...we've had 2 unarmed suspects shot and killed by police who were attempting a drug related arrest in just the last 2 days...actually maybe yesterday alone (Texas and California and both resulted in near riots). Anyhow, I guess you'll have to decide which is more moral and humane, drug laws that result in this kind of state sponsored aggression towards it's civillians or just allow folks to smoke a doobie if they feel like it.

I saw the article about the one in Anaheim. They mentioned it was MJ? The article I read did not mention what the situation was or what drugs were involved, just that police shot an unarmed man who may have had gang ties. Why don't journalist show a complete picture of the situation? They, meaning journalists, sure seem to enjoy fanning the flames of riots and racial tension in our country, why?
