So this thread has evolved into discussions about gender, family roles, and distance education. Here is an abstract of an article about gender and distance education.

"This article examines distance learning from a gender perspective. In any new area of enterprise, expectations have an important effect on planning, implementation, and evaluation. When it comes to distance learning, a variety of images of what this exciting new technology will look like and what it can empower us to achieve will determine how we develop it. In a study about technological experts' expectations and desires for their own technologies, the fantasies articulated by women and men are different in important and predictable ways. Women wish for small, appealing objects that allow them to collaborate, to create, to share their work, and to integrate their work and home lives. Men wish for magic wands that give them enormous power, fabulous speed, and infinite wisdom. This culturally sanctioned difference in technological expectations has real implications for the future of distance learning"

I believe women also desire power and wisdom. Women who are professionals in their respective fields may pursue distance education for enhancement of status, convenience, and competitive edge. Convenience may equal the phrase "fabulous speed" mentioned in the abstract. Distance education provides that much needed integration of work and family life for both men and women.

"Does one ever need more that one doctorate?"

If you want it, I'd say go for that second doctorate. You don't have much time left on this rock we call earth. My ultimate ambition is to travel to space. I'm saving money for this journey. Space travel is developing and costs will decrease in the future. Sorry for being off topic... please continue. :)

Duly noted. Although your posts are not exactly setting the world a flame either... ;)

It's not often that I quote myself on here, but I just re-read this post and it seemed (more than a little) mean spirited. So, I just wanted to apologize to cookderosa.

    Good work Japhy.

Sorry about my dull posts, if you knew the amount of times I have posted something inflammatory and then deleted it...:)...too much to do other than get in fights! I try and keep them reasoned and on-topic, this thread being a notable exception. Anyway, before I send you to sleep again, glad it looks like we can get on.

    All the best,

    Dave C.
