I made a post on my university's Facebook group about alternative options to Bachelor's, Masters and doctorates that are less expensive or more accessible than the Canadian options available. I talked about AMU/APU for Masters, Andrew Jackson's MPA (noted it was NA), UNISA for Doctorates and TESU for Bachelor's completion with CLEP tests and other banked credits.

My goodness! The response was swift and extremely negative. AMU was "poorly ranked", UNISA was an "obvious scam", Straighterline courses for $99 a month couldn't be real. I'm insulting the community by implying that there are no Canadian options and my motive must be to imply they can't handle the academics at a real school.

I deleted the post about 5 minutes after all that. Oh well.

I went to Athabasca University, one of the few schools offering completely online Bachelor's degrees with decent transfer credit and degree completion options. Their prices increased recently because of the school's previous pending insolvency.

Courses went from about 267 CAD per credit for someone outside of Alberta to about $282 per credit, and from 333 CAD to 561 CAD for international students. Textbooks used to be free and now there's an extra Learning Resource Fee attached. I completed my degree with the old prices but it got me thinking people who self-pay might want some cheaper options.

That does happen, people just are not aware of distance or online education options. It's sad, but they'll get to know it some way or another. When it's their time to ask for info, that's when I'll provide more feedback in regards to online education, I don't initiate the conversation...

I'm sorry you deleted your post. The information would benefit many readers, most of whom would not respond.

Your response reminds me of the wonderful Guinness slogan from years ago: "I've never tried it because I don't like it."

That's what I said about Windows 10. I've tried it, now. I still don't like it. And I've been using Windows for around 26 years. No more -- they've done it, this time.

(That's a lie - just about any reasonable computer will do.)

It seems national exceptionalism is self-defeating no matter which country one chooses....
