Seeing as how this is partially my fault for hitting on Kizmet during a thread about Kennedy I'll try to transition back to the thread. (and start a whole new thread for hitting on Kizmet elsewhere.)

Honestly, I think Kennedy could get elected in this day and age. The problem is that society has matured so much in the last 40 years and the things that made Kennedy stand out, wouldn't necessarily now.

I’m not sure exactly what you mean by ‘as society has matured’. We’ve certainly aged as a society, but about a dozen or more of these polls think society is headed in the wrong direction….even if society has ‘matured’.

In the last half century American society has matured greatly on race relations and tolerance for gays and lesbians, and those are significant. However, I think it's treaded water or backtracked in many other important areas, such as valuing individual liberty and personal responsibility.

I am just so discouraged by the slate of candidates...

I'm lean libertarian/conservative. I think we have way too much federal government control, but I don't believe a total laissez-faire approach, because I can see many businesses just taking advantage of people.

    Both parties, or republicans only?

    Buyer beware in any event!

I think this happens also, but more often I think big government is an instrument of this rather than a safeguard against it.
