New trend of media publishing names of CC permit-holders? https://bearingarms.com/beth-b/2017/02/26/local-sheriff-releases-names-ccw-permit-holders-media/
That was previously done in Florida, so Florida's legislators passed a law (Section 790.0601, F.S.) that now makes it illegal to release the personal identifying information of CCW licensees and applicants. Their information is "confidential and exempt from disclosure." Here is a list of what States can and cannot legally release to the media: https://www.rcfp.org/browse-media-law-resources/news-media-law/news-media-and-law-winter-2013/chart-gun-permit-data-acces
Very interesting. It appears as though there has been a greater push in recent times for states to conceal or otherwise threaten the access of these records (evidenced by the "Access Threatened" portion of the document).
Here is an interesting article: Title: "Registry" of lawmakers who voted for ammo control law is posted online Author: Derek Hawkins Snip: An anonymous blogger published a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of California lawmakers who supported a new gun control law that creates a database that: - tracks all ammunition purchases in California - has names and addresses of ammo sellers and ammo purchasers - has their driver's license information California’s legislative counsel subsequently ordered WordPress, the blogging platform, to remove the online list of names and addresses of lawmakers who voted for the ammo registry. WordPress obliged. Then a federal court ruled that the “registry” of lawmakers information was protected speech. Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California said the post and its republishing were “a form of political protest.” “The legislators’ home address and telephone number touch on matters of public concern,” the judge wrote in the 38-page opinion. “Plaintiffs lawfully obtained and truthfully published information that which was readily available online. When lawfully obtained, the truthful publication falls within the First Amendment.” The judge issued an injunction barring California from enforcing the state law that was used to censor the post. The law, he said, was unconstitutional because it wasn’t tailored to avoid trampling protected speech. The California legislative counsel’s office has until March 10 (2017) to decide how it wants to proceed in the case. Click here for the full story.
Here's a story on State Senator Leland Yee. Yee was a political fixture around San Francisco for many years, perceived as squeaky clean, a strong and outspoken advocate for stricter gun control... until he was caught connecting undercover FBI agents pretending to be gangsters with off-shore arms dealers selling military grade weaponry. He was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to arms trafficking and various corruption charges. (Kinda ironic.) The former President of the San Francisco School Board was sentenced to nine years in prison for similar corruption and arms trafficking charges, plus a murder for hire scheme. The judge called him a "one man crime wave". (More irony.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/02/25/ex-calif-state-sen-leeland-yee-gun-control-champion-heading-to-prison-for-weapons-trafficking/?utm_term=.d3cc4103c1c5 And here's a story about Chinatown's crime boss being sentenced to life in prison for no end of felonies (162 separate counts, including weapons sales, dealing drugs and prostitution, money laundering, extortion rackets, and murder). The amazing thing about Shrimp Boy is how closely connected he was to the top levels of California's current political leadership. They were always praising him as a "community activist" and showering humanitarian awards on him for "giving back to the community". (He was helping at-risk youth by inducting them into his gang, don't you know?) Shrimp Boy was a fixture at all the lavish dinners and was right at home with the biggest state political big-shots. 'Shrimp Boy' gets life in prison for murder, corruption in San Francisco case - LA Times There's this... the short Chinese guy is Shrimp Boy the crime boss, the taller guy is Gavin Newsom, currently California's Lt. Governor and widely expected to be the Democratic party candidate for Governor in the next election. http://www.modernluxury.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/story-photo-slide-show/shrimp_boy_gavin_0.jpg
