College will cost up to $95,000 this fall. Schools say it's OK, financial aid can numb sticker shock

”A number of private colleges — some considered elite and others middle-of-the-pack — have exceeded the $90,000 threshold for the first time this year as they set their annual costs for tuition, board, meals and other expenses. That means a wealthy family with three children could expect to shell out more than $1 million by the time their youngest child completes a four-year degree.

But the sticker price tells only part of the story. Many colleges with large endowments have become more focused in recent years on making college affordable for students who aren't wealthy. Lower-income families may be required to pay just 10% of the advertised rate and, for some, attending a selective private college can turn out to be cheaper than a state institution.”

Alternatively, do Southern Utah University's Speedway program and earn a Bachelor's degree start to finish for nine grand total.

Or do a degree at UMPI for even cheaper.

I don't know that any organization in Utah has had a more persistent evangelist than Steve for Southern Utah University Speedway!

When I first saw a post about that "Speedway" program, I thought "OMG! This Uni has a NASCAR track! That's HUGELY expensive. Way more than a full-slate NCAA Div 1 Athletics program! Is Jeff Gordon gonna speak at Commencement?"

The I saw the $9,000 price tag - and knew what "Speedway" meant. :)

A number of schools have closed, and more are closing. Many more need to close. Too many of them are pumping out wildly overpriced degrees to degree holders who either aren't getting jobs in the fields of their majors (and yes, I understand there are variables, but the number is just way too high) or are severely underpaid when weighed against the price tags of their degrees. I remember the big uproar over USC charging somewhere in the neighborhood of 115K for a Master's in Social Work. That shouldn't even be legal.

With enrollments having dropped, people are wising up. Enrollments need to drop even more, and people need to seek low-cost alternatives with more effort. The system will never change as long as people continue to validate it with funds. The alternatives are out there, but they need to be more visible. Having had a lot of conversations over the years with young college students, it doesn't appear that the low-cost alternatives are well-known. Schools have little or no incentive to promote them. After all, it would be counteractive to their bottom line.

Well, no track. No Jeff. So I went looking. I was hoping that Talladega College, an HBCU, here https://www.talladega.edu/
had something to do with Talladega Superspeedway, here. https://www.talladegasuperspeedway.com/

Nope. (1) Good school. (2) Famous track. No connection - except both are in Talladega FL :)

Totally agree about that. No ROI because that field does not pay that much. Last I heard. - “I remember the big uproar over USC charging somewhere in the neighborhood of 115K for a Master's in Social Work. That shouldn't even be legal.”

    What are these “low-cost alternatives?”
For sure! - “After all, it would be counteractive to their bottom line.”

Very true. There are ways that are cheaper overall, but they're not (to my knowledge) as easy to explain to the uninitiated as "Start here, go here, finish here, nothing to transfer, no negotiation required."

LOL! When someone else does something similar for less, you'll see my apostasy!

Even if you don't transfer anything into UMPI, I think it's possible to finish for under $9k. It depends on how frustrated one gets with the foreign language and science classes. :D
