Distance learning must be popular this season, I noticed that Amazon only has 3 copies left in stock of "Get Your IT Degree and Get Ahead". Congratulations to John & Tom (and Mariah if she reads this), don't spend those royalty checks all in one place!

Hmmm, I note that Amazon only has *1* copy of "Bears' Guide to the Best Computer Degrees by Distance Learning" left ;-)

(I must admit that I was surprised, myself! A royalty check in this lifetime would be a welcome sight indeed)

Yeah. Out of the 4 they bought, I suspect.

Based on the last royalty statement from McGraw-Hill, accompanied by $0.00, it will be 4 or 5 years before we earn enough to equal the advance they gave us.

John Bear, who still gets letters
from people saying, in effect, "Hey,
you've sold 400,000 Bears' Guides at
$30 each. How about using some of that
twelve million to pay for my tuition at..."
Doesn't quite work that way, alas. But
I do get 75 cents for each 14th ed. sold.

  4. Well, that means that I got the 4th. And it's a good 'un. Recommended to anyone interested in IT/CS degrees (but not specifically distance ed.).

    Dr. Bear,

Don't spend the $3 I gave you in one place.

  7. To avoid confusion, we should point out that "Get Your IT Degree and Get Ahead" and "Best Computer Degrees by Distance Learning" are two very different books. I have both. The former is much bigger and more complete -- but covers primarily residential programs (with information about distance ed options where appropriate). Good for getting a picture of what IT/CS university-level education is all about today. The latter is entirely focused on distance ed -- and describes 100 selected programs. Good if you want to quickly pick a good distance IT/CS program.

Re Larry's remark about royalties: In 1989, I wrote a single chapter for a book published by Marcel Dekker. Each year, Marcel Dekker would dutifully send me a letter saying that my cumulative royalties were below their threshold for sending me a check. Then in 2001, mirabile dictu, I finally got a check for $53.42, representing my total royalties from over a decade of sales. Talk about a successful author...

    Gert,

I once had the experience of being part of a team which had a text published by the University of Chicago Press. I also discovered that the rewards were intrinsic; I think I earned fifty dollars total. I eventually discovered how you know when your book is out of date. One day while cruising a used bookstore on the University of Illinois campus I discovered a dozen or so copies of our book … unopened in the cellophane wrapper. Everything has its time.
