Actually, the tragic injury and eventual death of Mr. Reeves serves to illustrate the desperate need in this country for a comprehensive system of federal horse control.

Actually, to correct you Tom, it was November 1998 at the University of Wisconsin, not 1999. This would have given Clinton a full two years to do something. He didn't.

However, there was talk about such research for nearly ten year's prior, which would have included the Clinton Adminsitration.

Embryonic stem cell research was ineligible for public funding because of a 1995 ban placed on NIH-funded human embryo research by Congress (a Democratic Congress).

So, again, more hypocrisy. Neither Clinton nor the Dems did anything to lift the ban!

Here in sunny California we get to vote next month whether to spend 3.5 billion dollars on stem cell research.

Actually Clinton was in power with a Democratic controlled Congress only to Jan 1995 and a Republican one after Jan 1995.

The potential gains from embryonic stem cell research were not widely known until the Science article (at which point many were hailing it as the scientfic discovery of the decade). Research before that was mainly on adult stem cells - a far less promising avenue of research.

Jimmy, are you trying to say that it's the Democrats that are hindering the research? If Orrin Hatch and Strom Thurmond were supporting the research, is it possible that Clinton was the roadblock?

C'mon, get real. This has to do with your anti-abortion pals Delay et al.

No I don't prefer Communism. I was pointing out the fact the capitalist system for funding drug research is not perfect. Witness the Canada drug controversy and the shortage of flu vaccine - both economic-based problems.

You're right, drug companies often do invest considerable resources with distant payoffs. However, the NIH plays a key role, especially in fostering new research and breakthroughs. At this point, most of the research is being done in the academic realm. If you've done academic research, you know that much of the funding comes from the government.

    The NIH goals:

"The goals of the agency are as follows: 1) foster fundamental creative discoveries, innovative research strategies, and their applications as a basis to advance significantly the Nation's capacity to protect and improve health; 2) develop, maintain, and renew scientific human and physical resources that will assure the Nation's capability to prevent disease; 3) expand the knowledge base in medical and associated sciences in order to enhance the Nation's economic well-being and ensure a continued high return on the public investment in research; and 4) exemplify and promote the highest level of scientific integrity, public accountability, and social responsibility in the conduct of science.

In realizing these goals, the NIH provides leadership and direction to programs designed to improve the health of the Nation by conducting and supporting research: in the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and cure of human diseases; in the processes of human growth and development; in the biological effects of environmental contaminants; in the understanding of mental, addictive and physical disorders; in directing programs for the collection, dissemination, and exchange of information in medicine and health, including the development and support of medical libraries and the training of medical librarians and other health information specialists."

Satisfied now? Or would you like to come back with some other nit picky nonsense?

I have a young friend doing a PhD at a prestigous university into the curative effects of a common material (not stem cells). Funding is from a variety of sources including federal grants.

First, I am no fan of Delay.

Second, no I am not saying that. I am simply pointing out the hypocrisy that the Dems had a chance to do something and they didn't and haven't received the type of criticism Bush has, that's all.

I meant to say a Democratic Senate.

Already voted for it. It takes it out of the hands of the FEDS and allows the voters in CA to decide what they wish to do.

I know most people realize this anyway, but to state a fact: Most die-hard research of this nature is done at the University level. Drug companies do not exist for the public good (despite what their slick advertisements like to say), the exist to make money. As stem cell research is in its infancy, the prospects for making money is only in the very long term. This is were the Stanford's USF's, UC Davis' and other research facilites come into line. They provide the hard and fast scientists, engineers, and technicians. They also provide a list of up and coming interns (students) who are in it for pure research. Unfortunately, this all costs money. Money that usually comes from federal grants and/or grant money from private sources. Beleive me, I would rather have my tax money go to this type of research than the lastest military toy.

I think it is rather disguisting to blame Bush for Reeves death. Although I doubt this was the work of a "liberal" as the orignal poster stated. If someone did in fact state this, then they are merely an asshole with an agenda, not a liberal or conservative.

My respect for you increased 10 fold Jimmy! Although I am no big fan of Orrin Hatch, I do respect his committment and would never question his integrity. I do wonder why the Republican's still allow this POS Delay to remain in power. It makes them look really bad.

Just an observation: What do die hard democrats actually think of Senator Daschle? I think he is a first class wimp. If the Democrats in the Senate want to step up the plate, they must first elect a hard hitting Senator to represent them - Daschle will never meet this requirement.

Oh, but why not? It's so much fun to see what kind of nonsense you throw back.

No, taking the alleged statement of one "liberal" and trying to make it the focus of this campaing is demagoguery.

Whoever this supposed liberal is does not accurately represent the Demcoratic party any more than David Duke represented the Republican party.

The sad thing, Jimmy, is that you know this. Yet you participate in spreading this nonsense.
