I heard a liberal blame Reeve's death to the Bush administration because W halted stem cell research. You libs need to stop blaming others and start taking responsibility for your own actions!!!

You conservatives need to stop listening to one, yes one, liberal, and then making sweeping statements about all liberals. Reeve died as a result of his injuries and all the complications that ensued. Perhaps you would like to explain to us how Reeve, a noted liberal, did not take responsibility for his actions. Bush's complicity, if there is any, will have to do with how the stem cell issue plays out.

Right now we have an imbecile in the White House who is setting scientific policy, which is tantamount to Bonzo the chimp managing your money. His entire party is being run by religious fundamentalists. Meanwhile, important scientific research is not being undertaken.

We are subjected to Laura Bush justifying curtailment of stem cell research by making the claim that stem cell research has not led to any cures, or tangible results so far.

YES, EXACTLY, that's what research is all about. Bush and his wife haven't grasped that apparently.

I agree that blaming Bush for Reeves' death is dispicable.

But I don't think that the words of one idiot can be generalized to all liberals, any more than the right's nuts discredit all conservatives.

Personally, in this matter of stem-cell research, I side with the liberals.

But I don't think that if the government had embraced fetal stem-cell research and thrown vast amounts of money at it, that we would already have a cure for injuries as devastating as Reeves'. That's a long way down the road, if it ever comes.

I wasn't aware that the President "halted stem cell research."

Didn't he simply elect not to use Federal tax dollars for such research?

Are private companies prohibited from doing stem cell research?

  7. Let's talk about "why" conservative Republicans, like George Bush and his lovely wife, are against embryonic stem cell research.

Because the "embryo" part is from a potential human being.

    And therefore tantamount to abortion.

    And therefore tantamount to murder.

Who cares how many sick people go uncured because of this non-separation of church and state as articulated in Bush's policy?

Just so long as those embryos live. Embryos that, according to one account, were going to be destroyed anyway because they are all sitting on a shelf in some lab - not to be used for creating life.

But that's not good enough for this gang. Oh no! They are embryos, so they are "life". Human life. Cannot be destroyed. Not without going against "God's will".

This Falwell/Robertson fueled policy making must stop. God help us all - elect John Kerry NOW.

Actually, not quite. President Bush (the only president to do so) research that involves already existing embryonic stem cells. He just said tht we will not fund research involving future ebryonic stem cells. Also, he does not take issue with stems cells derived from other sources.

Private companies are not prohibited from engaging in embryonic stem cell research; most simply choose not to since they see very little potential from it. If a medical research company actually believed that embryonic stem cells could lead to a major cure, a cure that could be patented and sold, gazillions of dollars would be poured into such research. There would be no need for any government funding.

Liberals are not dumb, just deceptive. They are perpetuating the idea that if the government were to just spend some money on embryonic stem cell research, then cures for flatulence and just about everything else that ails us are just around the corner. Sadly, this is nothing more than a tactic to win votes. Vote for Kerry and he will work hard to get you cured. Yeah, right.

Even Orrin Hatch and Strom Thurmond were in favor of federal funding.

We have neanderthals Tom Delay and and Dennis Hastert to thank for this cave-in to the religious right.

No you have it wrong. Because embryonic stem cell research is still in, shall we say, the embryonic stage, drug companies have not signed on. The amount of funding to reach critical mass is considerable, and this is something that no one drug company wants to take on, since the potential payoff is so far down the line (yes, conservatives, this is one of the drawbacks of the capitalist system that you so often tout.) This is often the stage that the government jump starts the process. This happens all the times in many different areas.

It has nothing to do with potential. There is plenty of potential. Just ask the many many prominent scientists who have endorsed the research, and have condemned Bush's CS stance on the matter.

And, no, the stakes are a little higher than flatulence. The whole controversy is just another way for the religious right to keep abortion on the table. Thank Mr. Delay, the genius that he is. Here is a guy that's so conservative he thinks Newt Gingrich was too liberal. Lord save us from people operating with little more than a brain stem from setting scientific policy. Unfortunately, stem cell research shows no promise for curing Delay's disease, unless they can figure out a way to grow another brain.

I'm not sure which is worse on this forum: the right-wingers or the left-wingers.

I, of course, consider myself neither a right-winger nor a left-winger - I am merely right. In fact, I am the only person in this forum who is right. The rest of you are wrong - yes, all of you.

Moreover, you are all going to hell. In fact, you are all going to burn in the lake of fire and brimstone. I am the only one who is saved, the only one going to heaven. I have a suite reserved there, with a poolside view, free hot breakfast, and HBO.

But seriously, y'all need to stop taking yourselves so seriously.

I think this should be deleted.

I think that this post should be removed. Although, I am not a Bush supporter, and not for censure, this is not appropriate in my view. At least the title should be changed.

It's the right-wingers, of course. Everyone knows that.

What the rad-libs fail to state is that Democratic President Bill Clinton, in office for eight years, along with a Democratic Congress, failed to move on this also!

    More hypocrisy!

I'm geting tired of correcting you guys. Embryonic stem cell research came on to the landscape in 1999 as a breakthrough reported in the journal Science. That was the end of Clinton's presidency, if you remember.

Here's a quote from Clinton at that time:

"We cannot walk away from the potential to save lives and improve lives, to help people literally get up and walk; to do all kinds of things we could never have imagined, as long as we meet rigorous ethical standards - and I'm convinced and Secretary Shalala is convinced that that has been done."

Immediately the right-to-lifers (there's a misnomer if there ever was one) started jumping up and down and screaming, and doing their best to block funding.

The original guidelines developed by the NIH provided that research could only come from embryos in fertility clinics and frozen in liquid nitrogen - embryos that were destined to be destroyed anyway. Not good enough from the brain dead right - at least not when there's a chance to revive the whole abortion debate again, and hold hostage potential health gains and reduction of human suffering in the process.

There will never, ever, be agreement on when life actually begins, as this is the whole abortion debate all over again. I think we can all agree that the people who might actually benefit from this research are all, actually, alive. It may even be you or me that benefits from this one day.

No sir, you are clearly wrong. There is no government restriction on embryonic stem cell research. Drug companies often take many years to develop new meds with incredible investment money at risk. They don't sit around and wait for the government to "kick-start" anything. If there's any possibility that embryonic stem cells have potential, these companies will pick it up and run with it.

Huh? I suppose you prefer communism? If you tilt any more to the left you're going to start looking like a cat chasing its tail in circles!
