My sister completed her AS in Accounting at Bergen Community College taking night classes and online classes, which took her 5 years. She has 20 years accounting experience and owns her own business as well as contracts her accounting services. She wanted to get her BS in Accounting and started going to William Patterson College (traditional school in NJ) part time. After completing a semester, they told her she still needs 102[/b[ more credits to earn her BS. She is not happy.

She is looking for a school that offers a BS in Accounting – not business with an accounting concentration or major. She is looking at Strayer. She wants to just finish already. I told her about CTU, and a couple of others I found. Any suggestions?

The subject of bachelor's degrees in accounting just came up over in the accredited vs. state approved vs. unaccredited board:

Okay, your sister took some classes at William Patterson College, so I'm guessing she's living in New Jersey. What is her reason for deciding on going for her bachelor's now? Did the state raise the degree requirements to a bachelor's recently? What is the concern over whether her school refers to accounting as a "major" or "track" or "concentration" or "emphasis" or "focus"? Does that have something to do with differences in the number of hours of accounting classes in the degree? I suggest that, if increased requirements for state licensure are the concern, you look at http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19406 and find decimon's post with the weblink to the clickable US map showing state-by-state licensure requirements for accountants.

MY sister does live in NJ and wants to get a bachelors because she just wants to do it. She tels her children how important college is (one grad for U Conn and attending Nova for Pharmacy one looking at FAU) and she wants to get a bachelors.

The state did not raise the requirements, she said William Patterson has been difficult and she has been fighting them about the number of credits they will accept since she enrolled last semester.

As far as why it must be a BS in Accounting as opposed to a BS in Business with a concentration...don't know. She mentioned that a BS in Business is easier to get. Not that it is easier just not as focused as a BS in Accounting. I don't know- she can be stubborn. I will look into it more. I know she said she wants to sit for, not the CPA but the CGA...Certifed General Accountant or something like that.

Ouch. I take it that although you describe her degree as an AS in Accounting, she actually took the career track AAS in Accounting http://www.bergen.cc.nj.us/ecatalog/programview.asp?program.cbn=12&semester.rm=1 rather than the transfer track AS in Accounting http://www.bergen.cc.nj.us/ecatalog/programview.asp?program.cbn=85&semester.rm=1 and she's thus seriously light on general education credits?

There's planty of accounting programmes listed on Gus Sainz's page http://collegedegrees.tripod.com/ but I suspect her best bet would be to find the one that takes the largest number of CLEP and DANTES and start testing out of her general education requirements.

Tell your sister that she should visit this site: www.certifiedgeneralaccountant.org . Also, tell her that the Tedmeister congratulates her on her desire to improve herself and wishes her well in her educational pursuits.
