"After 28 years as an anchor with NBC networks, Brian Williams called it quits on Thursday during his MSNBC show The 11th Hour. While his final episode was filled with old colleagues and recurring guests celebrating his career and paying him lip service, his final message was filled with warning.

“My biggest worry is for my country,” Williams said. “I'm not a liberal or a conservative. I'm an institutionalist. I believe in this place. And in my love of my country I yield to no one, but the darkness on the edge of town has spread to roads and highways and neighborhoods.”

“Grown men and women who swore an oath to our constitution, elected by our constituents, possessing the kinds of college degrees I can only dream of have decided to join the mob and become something they are not, hoping we somehow forget who they were,” Williams continued. “They've decided to burn it all down with us inside. That should scare you to no end as much as it scares an aging volunteer fireman.”"

Here's my amusing thought on the matter. I suspect that Lerner believes Brian Williams is talking about radical blacks and scary liberals rather than Trump still continuing to try to destroy our democratic institutions to insure that the 2024 presidency is handed over to him even after he loses the election.

No , I don't think that MSNBC would allow to even indirectly refer to radical blacks and scary liberals. (not that there are no radicals on all sides)
But Maddow and Williams exit may temporary affect MSNBC so they will have trials for new hosts, revolving door until they decide (ratings) or select more permanent candidates.
As to Trump, I don't think he will be running in 2024. I think the GOP focus at this time is on 2022.

“but the darkness on the edge of town has spread to roads and highways and neighborhoods.
Reads to me more like crime, riots, looting, and hate-rage
This part - Grown men and women who swore an oath to our constitution, elected by our constituents, is indeed about elected officials etc

MSNBC might be in a position to address its biggest problem: it's boring.

Every hour is the same thing: a host asking the same questions of pundits all day long. Each hour the host switches out, but the process and content are the same. There's some variation of content in the evening, and Maddow does it best of all, but the problem remains: they're in a 24-hour rut.

But Maddow is both leaving and staying, so I'm hoping she'll provide more variety, more deep reporting. (Listen to her 7-part podcast of "Bagman" about Spiro Agnew for a sample of what she can do.)

By the way, and relevant to this board, she's "Dr Maddow," having earned a PhD from Oxford while on a Rhodes Scholarship. I always thought that was kinda cool.

Very true, especially the repeat ad nauseum observation. Here's my thoughts on the matter.

I find the coverage of "developing" stories very boring. For example a big hurricane coming, a shooting just happened, OJ Simpson is driving his black SUV down the highway and won't stop for police. I would rather just wait a few hours or a day and hear what happened in a 2 minute news piece. Well MSNBC coverage is like a continuous "developing" news story. It's covering the details as they happen with lots of speculation as to what it might mean. Whereas the CBS Evening News, for example, is the 2 minute news piece coverage summarizing what actually happened.

I can't imagine watching hour after hour of that packaged "fake urgency" repetition even if it were from a channel catering to my point of view, or, like NewsNation, at least trying to maintain a neutral point of view.

But it does remind me of the Millennial joke that "Fox News did to our grandparents what they thought violent video games would do to us."

Every time I reread this I just laugh harder. It is so true which makes it even more funny and I'm one of the grandparents!

I understand her political views do not align with others, but credit is due to her: She's done well with her life and a PhD from Oxford is an accomplishment!

Everyone's political views do not align with some others, as long as there are any political views at all. I for one rarely disagree with Dr. Maddow.

No one on those channels really suits me. That said, though, she's obviously Mensa-level intelligent and I'm not at all surprised she's highly accomplished academically.

When I do indulge myself in the more entertainment side of the news, The Rachel Maddow Show is far and away my favorite.

I have no doubt that Maddow is an extremely intelligent person. That's what makes it so easy in her case to answer the age old question of "are they stupid, or are they evil?"

Glenn Grenwald once said: “I used to be really good friends with Rachel Maddow...And I’ve seen her devolution from this really interesting, really smart, independent thinker into this utterly scripted, intellectually dishonest, partisan hack.”

I don't see her as being all that different from some of the super partisan Fox News personalities. I am surprised to see her journalism being praised on this board. She is the epitome of what is wrong with tv journalism.

Repeating someone's unsupported insult doesn't make it so.

And what would it be in my case, Maniac?

In what does she excel? Greenwald is known for quality investigative journalism. She's known primarily for partisan entertainment and extremely one-sided commentary.

You're drawing an assessment about someone who draws assessments for a living. Why would I argue any differently? It changes nothing.

I'm not in the mind reading business, which is why the question is usually so hard to answer. All I can do is observe patterns, and there is a clear pattern indicating that you don't respect my intellect nor believe in my sincerity and I don't think I've said anything to you to warrant that.

I had interpreted your post about Maddow being either evil or stupid as just kind of a tongue in cheek comment. This response seems to indicate that you were perhaps being serious. Do you really believe she has to be either evil or stupid?

I don't know if she's literally evil, but I do know that she is insufferably smarmy and arrogant and that she spearheaded the campaign to transform MSNBC from the most enjoyable cable news network into something entirely unwatchable top-to-bottom. Looking at the reviews on IMDB, there are a very high number of 1/10 and 10/10 ratings. Either you love her or you hate her, it seems. I give her a 1/10.
