Border Institute of Technology

For the record, it has come to our attention that there is an entity (Border Institute of Technology) that has taken the much of its website content directly from William Howard Taft University’s site – including the names of Taft’s administration and Board of Governors. Border Institute of Technology also falsely claims accreditation through the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).

The Taft University System, Taft Law School, William Howard Taft University and its officers, directors and employees have no present or past affiliation with the Border Institute of Technology.

We have been informed that DETC has sent a cease and desist letter.

I recommend that extreme caution be used in any dealings with this entity.

Definitely a fraud site - thanks, Mr. Boyd, for the heads-up.

Looks like a "usurpation." It appears there WAS a legit "Border institute of Technology" site - which is down, now.

The defunct site was . Here's a little info on that school from Peterson's:

Border Institute of Technology in , - Find information about admissions, tuition, majors and campus life at

The new, fraudulent site (with info lifted from William Howard Taft U. site, as Mr. Boyd points out) is

It appears to have the country code of Spain. So far, I'm unable to find who operates it. If I do learn anything, I'll pass it on.

The "real" Border Institute of Technology appears to be a closed school. It's here, in the Texas listings of closed career schools:

How to Get Records for Closed Career Schools — TWC

    Here's the info they provided:

Border Institute of Technology – El Paso
    Steve Simon
    201 Granite Ln
    Austin, TX 78737
Send $50 check or money order, per transcript, payable to Steve Simon.

Looks like the new (Spanish? - I'm not so sure!) bandidos hijacked the name - and then hijacked the Taft U. info.

What a shame. The frauds never quit.

I have a hunch this bogus school may be run by people somewhere in Asia. I think the objective is:

    (1) Hijack a a now-disused name
    (2) Concoct a very American-looking university site with stolen info. Host the site outside the US.
    (3) Flog it as a "genuine" American distance school to locals somewhere in Asia.

I've seen one other mill that says it's "located in Spain," though I don't think it is: Wilson State University.

That one's definitely not Spanish. It's owned, I believe, by a fellow I (and maybe others) call "The Grand Thief of Karachi," ( Pakistan) who runs 20 or more fake schools from his apartment there and reportedly nets $70M a year.

I don't think this fake Border Institute of technology is one of his, though. A copycat, possibly. If Asian, likely from a different part of Asia.

Yes - and they also state their Business programs are AACSB-accredited, their Engineering School is ABET-accredited and their Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is APA-approved!

To (somewhat ineptly) steal a phrase from Hallmark, they obviously "care to lie their very best."

I suspect Hallmark is aware that their cards are used under cloak of prevarication all the time.

Looking more and more like an Asian-originated fraud. From this (bogus-looking) Border Institute of Tech site: Border Institute of Technology I was directed to this phony accreditor:

    ICAAE About

I note a preponderance of Asian names listed and claimed accreditation in Asian countries - though not exclusively so.

This "Border" thing is an extremely clumsy fraud. These people don't have any skills as criminals. I'm done, here.

Well -- almost done. One final observation:

This ICAAE claims it's a NACES member. Not on the NACES list, here. NACES® Members Probably copied their info from a real NACES member's page. It just gets fraudier 'n fraudier! DONE NOW.

BTW - "ICAAE" advertises their 99th annual convention in San Francisco. Unfortunately for ICAAE, that's AACRAO's 99th "do," not ICAAE's!

Oh, what a tangled, thick and stupid web they weave! (ICAAE that is.)

Sure - and it's not their fault! They just make great cards, e.g.

"Sorry for your loss" - Bernie Madoff
"Happy Mother's Day" - to the maid, from Arnold S.

I hope this is the last thing I get to provide. Here's the registrant info on the second bogus "Border Institute Site." at Border Institute of Technology There's an address, name, phone and e-mail in Pennsylvania.

Maybe that's where the "cease and desist letters" could be sent, for starters.

It's ironic that all these "Career Schools & Colleges" are out of business.

Yes, it is a big list. Very competitive - and somewhat capital-intensive business. I don't imagine the survival (or turnover) rates are any better than in a lot of other retail businesses.

    (1) Lot of outfits vying for a piece of a limited pie.
    (2) "Big Names" rule, I guess. Just like when Walmart comes in, the mom-and-pops die.

Smaller schools wither when one of the brand-name career colleges opens a branch. You know the kind of outfits I mean.

Interesting that the registration lists Texas as the Registrant State but has a valid Pennsylvania address including City and State in the Registrant Address1 Field.

This is the address listed at the bottom of the page for the "institute":
9611 Acer Avenue, El Paso, TX.

    I live in El Paso.

That address is a Goodwill Industries, and I live not far from it. In fact, I drove by it earlier today.

Well, El Paso is near the border, I suppose.

You cannot get any more "nearer". Literally walk over the Rio Grande on a bridge.
