    one mo' thing

I hit "submit" a little too quickly.

It's worth noting as well that in spite of the anomaly with the NYU exams, the COSC folks have been extremely helpful, and having dealt with people from each of the "big three" at one time or another I wouldn't hesitiate to recommend COSC.

(be nice if I could figure out where to get a college mug or t-shirt or some other form of memorabilia, tho' :)->)

    Re: Hail Charter Oak!

I suppose your right. I am just going to wait a day or two because I am waiting for an answer to a question that turned into a four part question. I would rather not overwhelm them before I get my last answer to my last question. Don't worry, I will get an answer to the Bertlitz test question. Thanks for the encouragement. This all seems like a maze sometimes.

That's funny you bring up the issue of their lack of School items, like mugs, shirts, stickers, stuff like that. I e-mailed them about six months ago suggesting they carry some items like that. Oh well. Maybe if enough people e-mail them, they will start selling some of those items.

I do agree COSC does have good customer service. I will be applying with them over Excelsior and TESC.

    Thanks for the info.

There's a Charter Oak State College Student Association and a Charter Oak State College Alumni Association. Perhaps one of them can get permission to sell logo merchandise through Cafe Press with the proceeds going to their scholarship fund.

I went ahead and contacted Karen Collies, who was my advisor at Charter Oak, about the Berlitz test and the lack of logo merchandise. Here was her response:

So, two for two! Go Charter Oak! Home of the, uh, Fightin' Electrons, or whatever.

    Fightin' Electrons?

Hmm... this may have some promise. Maybe the "Fightin' Firefoxers"? "Biff, Bang, Pow, Smash, hit 'em til their browsers crash!" ?

To answer your question, we do honor the ACE recommendations for credit as long as everything matches exactly concerning dates and titles of the courses/exams evaluated. We do sell shirts through the Alumni Association. You can contact Lori Pendleton, Director of the Alumni Association for more information at [email protected].

    FAQ section of Berlitz test

    5. When will my Berlitz results be sent to my university?
Answer: The results are usually sent out within 5 business days after your evaluation date.

    6. How long does it take to receive credit from my university?
Answer: Once your university receives the results, it takes approximately 5 business days to apply the credits.

    7. How can I find out how many credits I received?
    Answer: Contact your advisor.

    8. How do I know where my credits will be distributed?
    Answer: Contact your advisor.

I just want a few opinions. If I am not enrolled with COSC yet, would these test results be held by ACE? I know ACE has transcripts that can be ordered.

I am guessing once I apply with COSC, I can then request transcripts from ACE to be sent to COSC?

I will e-mial the test coordinator, but thought I would throw this out there for some opinions.

    Thanks,

    Abner :)

Just Got the answer from excelsior:
Unfortunately the answer is "NO" apparently this particular exam has not been reviewed by ACE.
It seems like the exam has been developed specifically for UOP.
I called Berlitz and asked if this exam has been reviewed ACE and the person did not even know what ACE was she stated that she will research it and call me back.
I don't know if there is a way to get it approved, we may want to draft a letter (Anybody wants to volunteer??).
It seems to me that if they approved the NYU which has not been reviewed by ACE they should be able to do the same for the UOP/berlitz Exam.
Another way might be to have the exam on a UOP transcript via credit bank (I don't know if UOP offers this service).
    Let's discuss this..................

    Pilot:

Excelsior accepts the New York University exam, because it is an accredited university.

Berlitz is a private language institute, and it not accredited or ACE reviewed.

I understand that, but UOP is accredited and apparently the exam has been developed in collaboration with/for UOP.
UOP grants 12 lower and 6 upper credits for the exam therefore my suggestion was to have the credits listed in a UOP transcript and have it transfered to excelsior!
    I hope this help!!!!

Thats weird, because the Berlitz website says they are ace reviewed? Anway, you guys may not hear from me in a day or two, my computer is messed up at home.

I will check back in a couple of days.

    Thanks,

Having the exam on a UOP transcript seems to me the only way to have it credited at another RA college!

Just one more thing I forgot to point out regarding the NYU exam, even though the University Is accredited the exam is a "non credit exam" , and that is why I was drawing a parallel between The berlitz/UOP exam and the NYU exam.
    Hope this help clarify everything!!

    Extract from the NYU site:

    French 16-Point Proficiency Exam
    X18.1311 / Non–Credit / $345
    FALL 2005
The 16-point exam in French is the same as the 12-point exam but with the addition of a 350-word essay on a more complex subject. You are required to write about abstract ideas, support an argument, hypothesize, and write in longer paragraphs. You have three hours to complete the entire 16-point exam. Credit granted is at the discretion of the institution receiving the results. Students are strongly urged to discuss accreditation with the institution's adviser prior to taking the exam. The results of this exam are valid for five years. To sign up to take a test or to obtain more information, please call (212) 992-9060. No discounts apply to the course.

I thought the CLEP was up to twelve credit-hours, six lower division, six upper division?

    CLEP credits

That's correct; I received 6 upper and 6 lower level credits for the Spanish CLEP, although at Charter Oak, at least, they were all transcripted as lower-level (CS 161 & CS 162)
