My masters is in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Most clinical mental health masters degrees (counseling. social work, mft) are around 60 credits. Mine was over our required 62 because I took some electives.

Anyway... 58 credits for a doctorate seems extremely low. Especially if that includes an internship AND an 18 credit dissertation.

It is a school with a campus. I think most people would have a problem with a University that only exists online. The notion of a virtual school is too new and not many like it.

I believe that if NCU would open a small campus with face to face programs, this would help to add credibility to the online programs. Something they should consider for future.

Not necessarily. It depends on whether we're talking about (a) semester hours or quarter hours and (b) hours after the master's or hours after the bachelor's. Sixty semester hours after the master's is about the standard for a doctorate.

Very interesting conversation regarding the nature and requirements of various Ph.D. Programs. I can speak for the Bellevue University Ph.D. in Human Capital Management as I am the Director of this program. Our doctoral students are all working adults from various sectors who share one common question - how do I demonstrate the value of people in my organization so that senior leadership 1) understands the value that people bring and 2) is able to make capital investments into people that result in improved organizational performance and outcomes.

Our program is not for the faint of heart as it requires alot (at least 25 hours a week) of time and energy, especially given students are working 50+ hours per week in their day job. Upon graduation, students could teach and do research in an academic setting, but that is not the primary goal of the program. Rather, our program is designed so that our graduates can conduct valid research projects within a real organization, and understand the strengths and limitations of such research.

Topics in the human capital arena include knowledge management, intellectual capital, economics, accounting, organizational learning, human learning, social media and innovation, research, leadership, performance management, the business case for human capital investments, among others. Courses are taught from a scholar/practitioner view, meaning that we seek to apply theoretical frameworks in practice. This is difficult, but we are determined to 1) learn from the theories that exist; 2) advance the theories that exist and 3) apply the theories that exist and create new theories based upon current organizational life. Real learning for real life.

Our first cohort is completing their coursework at the moment and will be taking comprehensive exams this summer. Once that is completed, they can formally propose their dissertation and begin their research. We have 13 in cohort 1, 14 in cohort 2, 25, in cohort 3 and are opening up a second cohort for Spring, 2013.

This is the first program I know of specifically in human capital management. Univ. of So. Mississippi takes more of a human development perspective, as far as I can tell. The Bellevue program includes development topics, but focuses more heavily on the business side of the topic.

Interested students can contact me directly at [email protected]. We would be happy to talk with you to determine if your educational goals are in line with what we offer.
