My local TV station just showed an unnamed college in Denver that has a science program with this title. Apparently covers history andscience of brewing with students brewing and tasting student brews.

During my first (and only) foray into "traditional" college in 1983, it was common for schools to host beer drinking competitions. The major breweries like A-B and Miller would even sponsor the events, supplying the advertising, prizes, and most importantly, the beer.

Of course, such things have since fallen victim to the PC Nazis and MADD zealots. Overall, it's probably not a good idea for schools to encourage drinking, but damn.....it was fun while it lasted.

    swilling and studying

UVM has been on the list of top party schools for over a decade. It has worked hard to clean up its image to get back to the image of a "public ivy" it had in the 1970's. The uncontrolled drinking has cost donations, quality students and profs leaving. For awhile they did not have Friday classes because too many students would be too oiled, potted, canned, boiled, hungover, drunk, etc.
The marketers of addictions products are real examples of how advertising can shape public opinion. And most of the people don't even know it. In a way marketing is a form of education, ie changing people's behaviors.
At one time Miller came up with the campaign about the right time for Miller. It was holidays, then they added weekends, then evenings. I think they now have anytime.
The successful addiction marketers target young people, because the earlier you use a substance, the higher rate of addiction to it.
I think at this point the addiction advertisers have been so successful that some people believe you cannot have a good time without the addictive substance.
Maybe those of us in education should use this as a model for changing behavior in a classroom?
    All the best!
PS the tone of alcohol ads has changed. Once it was only "good times", guy gets girl "sex appeal". Now, the girl slams the door leaving, and the guy looks at his brew and says "I still have you". That is an example of addiction at work. the addiction replaces, people in ones life.

Interesting take on "addiction advertising". Everything you have said may well be true, but many people enjoy alcohol with addiction being attached to it. Pot is probably the same way (never really liked the stuff ;) ). I doubt you could say the same about cigarettes though, although they don't cause the outrageous behavior observable in the addicts of other drugs. They are, however, much more deadly, and cost the public much more money. I guess my belated point is that you may be overreacting (with your background, it is understandable), and that I think it would be a very interesting course.

The bud people offered to put a swimming pool on the Johnson State campus. But they wanted the right to have a full sized bud people ad at the bottom.
If you ask a class of 4th graders addiction ad jingles, they know them all.
    All the best!

    Bud Builds a pool

If schools would use the funds they have in the class room instead of flying administrators on junkets then there would be plenty of $$$ for the schools without needing corporate sponsorship

Seems like a pretty good way to get students interested in science on some level. It will probably be a pretty popular course among non-science majors.

When I went to Mankato State University (now known as Minnesota State University--Mankato), I took a science class called "The Physics of Hi-Fi." It covered the concepts of wave theory and how you can use them to get the most out of your stereo system. It, too, was a very popular class among us non-science majors.

I've done the practicum. Now where do I get the credit?

I hope the credits don't expire because I have more or less given up such activity.

Same here. What's worse is if you have no proof with respect to your life experience (e.g. inordinately large and round belly).

    "College Credit for Beer-Making - 1 comments

DENVER - Call it beer making 101.

Students at Metropolitan State College are learning to brew their own beer and earning college credit for it.

The six-week class, available to students in the hospitality and restaurant administration program, is being underwritten by Coors, which pays the $500 tuition.

It's the only college class of its kind in Colorado, organizers said.

"There's a lot of interest in beer," said professor Michael Wray, who introduced the course this semester. "An important part of the program is the ability to develop sensory evaluation skills."

In other words, you don't just brew the beer, you taste the beer. Students must be 21.

"I get a lot of flak when I tell my friends I'm heading off to beer class," said student Robert Reyes, an aspiring chef who's also taking a wine class.

"But it's a lot more difficult than I ever imagined," Reyes said. "I've realized how you can pair beer and food like you can pair wine and food."

I could not find course description inMSCD catalog.

    marketing classes

One of the best social psy. type classes I ever had looked at the marketing techniques used by the alcohol trades. Quite an in depth study.

    More Drinking

I am fairly sure that Brock University in Ontario (where I did my B.Ed) has a degree in wine making. Such a course might suit the more discerning academic.

As a teacher myself, I have toyed with the idea of writing curriculum for grade 10 basic level swearing, grade 11 general smoking and then round it all off with grade 12 advanced loafing about. Such an education would make the student admirably suited for university.

    Any further suggestions?

    save the dairy farm

My father suggested in the 1960's suggested the only way to save the dairy farm was to create a "milk beer".
The advertising techniques of the beer industry have been much more successful in creating new users than the milk industry.
A milk beer would be able to tout both the addictive qualities and the health qualities.
Now alcohol is being marketed in bottle bottled juice, frozen in fruit pops, and of course in bottled tea.
Tea and added alcohol? a healthy alternative to beer? LoL :)
    Does anyone see a trend?
    All the best!

I could just see the assignments in the DL degree in Culinary Arts. Cook till tender, put it in an envelope, make sure to put on adequate postage and send it in. The professor will grade on taste, texture and smell. :D

    new internet technolgy

To do the culinary arts course/brewmaster course on-line you wold need the following equipment.
    breatholizer
    smokedector
    co2 dectector
    digicamera
    microphone
    smelloizer

You make the product under the watchful eyes of the digicam. The smokedector proves you did not burn it, the microphone can pick up the sizzle of the grill. The smelloizer can sniff the good flavor. The CO2 detector would identify the CO2 in the beer. The breatholizer would prove it was alcoholic. However, there would have to be the caution, don't drink and suate! :) LoL Always have a designated
