Now if my grandson said he wanted to be an actor... I might say something, but I'd still do anything I could to help him.

I should! His aunt (my daughter-in-law) earned a degree in drama. She's had a good career in theatre for quite a few years now - not acting, but artist, set design etc. Exactly what she wanted to do from the outset.

I agree that there is a tremendous oversupply of talent in the gaming industry today. However, that doesn't mean one should not pursue a degree in game design. Rather, one should understand the limitations of the industry and be realistic about what one can do with the degree.

The best advice is to learn about the different parts of the game industry and study that. Every top game designer I know about started off in customer support, community development, art assets, or even as a top game player and worked their way up to "lead designer," always at a different gaming company than where they started. For example, Greg Street the Lead Systems Designer for World of Warcraft has an undergraduate degree in Marine Biology.

So there is nothing wrong with getting a degree in game design but realistically one us going to start by making $10 an hour like all the other plebs. Where the degree is going to help is ten years down the line once you have the industry experience.
