One of the bartendresses down at the friendly neighborhood local karaoke saloon just caught me reading the premier issue of _Online Degrees_ and was wondering if I might help her find a distance learning associate's degree in social work. While Bears' Guide 15th edition had zillions of bachelor's and master's degrees in social work and even a few doctorates, the only associate's in social work via DL that the Tedmeister could find was Thomas Edison State College (www.tesc.edu). Does anyone know of any other such programs?

While there might be some relevant degree programs around it is quite possible that at the Associates degree level they may not be referred to as "Social Work" degrees. Try looking for Associates degrees in Human Services.
    Jack
(in some places there has been legislation passed/proposed that prohibits anyone calling themselves a "Social Worker" unless they have an MSW)

Thanks for the tip re human services degrees. My friend (who, hopefully, has done her research) seems to think that with an associate's degree there will be some degree-relevant if less senior and less well-paying positions available in the social work field. And she thinks that once she has her associate's degree she'll continue on for more pieces of paper and letters behind her name.

I know that with bachelors degree in Social work or in psychlogy
people are working as Social Work Asistant.

My Grandparents atend adult daycare were there is MSW and couple of SW asistance.

Maybe with Associate degree this is posible to get asistant job.
The pay for SW Asistant is on overage 15 USD per hour.
Specially if the person bi libgual, the facility that I'm talking about hosts Russians, Koreans and a few Chineese Sr. Citizens.

I believe there's an Associates degree program in Human Services to be found at Empire State and at Upper Iowa State.
    Good luck to your friend.

    Human Services

    hi Ted:

An A.A. in Human Services will usually qualify somebody for something in County Position. Out here there are positions called Eligibility technicians, they administer programs like Medi-Cal, AFDC, General relief, etc. This would be a good starting point for her, once in the county there are a lot of different options she can transfer into.

    Take care,

    Abner :)

Hi - I'm not sure about Empire State, however it looks like Upper Iowa only offers an AA in General Business or Liberal Arts, not Human Services. They do offer a Bachelor's in Human Services. Also, if by some chance your friend lives in Wisconsin, she can go for a BS in Human Services AND a Social Work Training Certification. You can check out all of the particulars here:

    http://www.uiu.edu/catalogs/eu/html/undergrad_degrees_human_services.html#humanservices

    - Tom

P.S. I'm sure your friend probably knows this already, but Social Workers do not generally make a great deal of money (compared to other professions), especially those who do not have an MSW. Of course, if this is her passion, then the money shouldn't be a huge factor.

According to salary.com, the median national average for someone with an MSW is $47k/year. For someone with only a BSW, it drops to $39, 500/year. Actually, this isn't too bad come to think of it. I would hope that someone with a Master's degree would make more than $47k/year, but I'm guessing that isn't always the case.

When we speak of the "average," are we speaking of average starting salaries or the average salaries for everyone, be they newbies or old-timers with 40 years experience?

Try keying into the Google search box:

+"associate of arts in human services" OR "associate of science in human services" +distance OR online site:.edu

Though, because of its length, it may break, on your screen, into two lines, it's actually only one. You should be able to just copy the above line to the clipboard and then paste it into the Google search box and, because there's no actual carriage-return/line-feed in the string, above, it should paste-in as one long text string.

Japhy is correct in saying that Social Workers don't make much money. I don't pay much attention to the national figures but I'd bet that the 47K figure is the "average" and not the "average starting salary," (as Ted asked). My brother, a high school teacher, makes more than I do. Beyond that, I believe that Japhy is incorrect in regards to Upper Iowa. I visited the school website before posting the information. If it really matters to anyone I'll be happy to provide the link. Just ask.
