Medic is good duty, if you aren't squeamish. Independant corpsman duty in the Navy is about as good as it gets. And, when you get out, there are significant real world career possibilities.

But, as I recall, hospital corpsman was also one of the hardest ratings to get into. It attracted "the best and the brightest".

Hunh. And those are among the few Navy Reservists bwing called to duty in Iraq.

Doesn't seem like enough... but... I dunno... maybe I'm wrong.

  7. Unpopular war = lowered standards

I haven't really been following this discussion, but based on the title of the thread alone it does not surprise me at all that the U.S. Military has had to lower its standards regarding entry qualifications in order to keep its recruit pipeline full (given the extremely unpopular and seemingly interminable war in Iraq).

I'm surprised they even still require a H.S. degree to get in, under these circumstances....

The solution to this problem is to reinstate the draft, and bring in the brightest and best again to keep Bush's wars of aggression against the wrong targets on track.....

He was court martialed (summary) and reduced from a senior non-commissioned grade to a junior enlisted NCO grade. This is almost unheard of. If you get busted at the E7-E9 level, you almost always are kicked out. That they did not boot him is very rare. Did he deserve jail, I do not think so. If a civilian corporate recruiter told an applicant to purchase a degree so they could get the job, would he be arrested? No. In both cases your career would be over. A recruiter with special pay and allowances probably makes closer to 60-75K depending on the geographical area. If he were to be seperated from the Army and lose his pension, with an average life of expectency of say 75 y/o, he would stand to lose the medical benefits (tricare for life) and pension benefits of $1,353,989. Overall, if he is not seperated administratively, then he got lucky. I do not condone his actions, and it is a breach of trust and a black eye for all recruiters.
