The value added by a general MBA has looked a bit dicey to me for a long time, all the more so as the costs have risen to dizzying heights. I rather suspect though that the specialist master's degrees (MST, M. Acct., MIT and similar) in business are holding their value.
We have spoken about this as being a sort of "check the box" degree and so perhaps people are beginning to ask, "Why should I pay top dollar simply in order to 'check the box?'"
I think you both make good points. And I think that MBA holders have earned about as much respect from the rank and file as do Second Lieutenants from soldiers.
