Apparently there aren't just medical schools in St. Kitts...

Re: Re: California medical accreditation respected?

My only point was that Ross University seemed to have a relatively high reputation among Caribbean medical schools. I cited its California approval -- which many Caribbean medical schools lack -- as evidence to support my point.

As additional evidence, Ross University is also highly rated by the American Association of International Medical Graduates.

The fact that Ross University has "seals of approval" from the California Medical Board and AAIMG does not necessarily mean that other, unlisted Caribbean schools are bad.

If not DL Calif. approval may have some merit. If DL Calif. approval remains suspect. The less than wonderful PWU
is Cal approved. Anybody recommend them?

If I understand correctly, there's a difference between California's state-approved less-than-wonderful schools that often get denigrated here and California's process for approving foreign medical schools.

    Caldog,

Good of you to "brang" up the AAIMG; we are watching them closely.

    Sr. or Sra. Bullet:
I was curious, where did the information or where did you get your information that ROSS VET SCHOOL offers or offered DL?

    John:
Well actually it was a little joke. (I've never used a Smilie; do I have to start now?) Actually there are a moderate number of veterinary courses by distance learning, including a well regarded continuing education series at Auburn, but the only distance degree I know of in the field is an Associates in Veterinary Technology at Purdue.

Maybe you need to get a better joke book, John. You could start to learn to use smiles, though.

I thought that you had some knowledge of DL there that I had not heard of before myself. There was one medical school down there that tried DL medical studies, though. Was it MUA? Maybe some other school.

Yes. I think it was UHS Antigua. They have a program called On-Line Basic and Clinical Science Lecture Presentations (OLBSLP & OLCLP) for the basic sciences. Thanks!

IUHS was an enigma at the time they first popped up on the horizon some 4-5 years ago. I seem to remember checking rather thoroughly and they had pictures of the typical janky St. Kitts campus facilities, but they also had a very not-typical list of people with serious, legitimate credentials... who actually did know about, and were involved with, the school.

I haven't checked up on them since, but at the time it was either a very sophisticated scam that went to a lot of trouble to look credible, or else a genuine attempt at a quality nontraditional program.

    go and come back

The entire DL in medical education issue has been distorted beyond imagination.

The idea that any school tries to educate physicians from their living room is absurd.

I have seen nothing, read nothing, been presented with nothing that suggests that the schools that have charters are doing anything besides being innovative.

The only portion of studies that has DL is the Basic Sciences phase and even within the Basic Sciences phase there are on campus portions; for there are some components that must be evaluated face to face with an instructor.

As soon as a student reaches the next phase (clinical sciences) he or she must obtain training face to face and onsite with a properly licensed physician; say good bye to the flexibility of the basic sciences portion.

Most if not all schools requiere the student to have some background in the scientific field; which is a big help towards the self directed study portions of the program.

I point towards DL being acceptable in Nursing, Veterinary , and other fields.....so why some organizations oppose Medicine is beyond me.

Re: Re: DL med schools in Carib.

Some of the people involved with these schools are less than wonderful people. I recall that the admissions guy for St. Christopher's was a DO who had lost his license to practice. What can he do? Well, he can get a job at one of these kinds of schools either teaching or doing admin. He interviewed potential St. Chris medical students and, as far as I know, is still doing it.
