It is important to understand that Antioch University is not the same as Antioch College. The two institutions split from each other several years ago. The college, which boasts such luminary graduates as Coretta Scott King and Rod Serling, ultimately closed before reopening under a new administration several years later. They are now surviving (how well we do not know) and have become once again RA by the HLC.

Antioch University’s MacGregor School, which became part of the university, moved off of the college’s Yellow Springs campus several years ago. For a detailed history, see the article in the Yellow Springs News at https://ysnews.com/news/2018/07/au-midwest-cuts-staff-moves-online.

Both the college and university have been struggling to survive for a number of years. Most of the good programs have been discontinued in favor of online programs, typical of higher education. The closure history is similar to what Union did with Vermont College (once part of Norwich University) before they dumped the entire school.

Unfortunately, we’re simply seeing another example of the university-without-walls model dying in favor of the inferior online model.

Disclosure: I applied to Antioch for my M.A. degree. I also applied to Vermont College, then part of Norwich, was accepted by both, and chose V.C. (with no regrets). Once upon a time, Antioch had a credible program, but they’ve shot themselves in the foot so many times over the years that it’s difficult, even now, to predict their future. But that’s the case with almost all programs that followed the university-without-walls model.
