caldog: (At In-n-Out) "I get a plain burger, extra tomato, extra onions, "

John: They do extra tomatoes??!? An undocumented feature. Who knew? An excuse to go there today. (I like the fact that the order-taker asks if you are going to eat them in the car, and if so, they are packed differently.)

I've been slowly working my way through Fuddruckers' exotic meat burgers. Quite like buffalo and ostrich. Elk rather bland. Baby harp seal . . . oh, never mind.

The list of undocumented In-N-Out features is extensive. Some good unofficial documentation here.

Extra vegetables are readily available at no additional cost. My understanding is that extra meat, extra cheese, and extra bun cost more (why extra bun? Some people like a third bun between the meat patties on a double-double).

Being fitness nuts the only burger my wife and I get is:

    Elevation Burger - Ingredients Matter

At the in-store menu they have the calories listed by each item and you can watch them make the burger.

"A woman collapsed into unconsciousness at the Las Vegas restaurant while eating a "double bypass burger," drinking a margarita and smoking a cigarette."

I will never understand why people do this to themselves.

Michael Savage (whatever you think of his politics, he has a Ph.D. in Nutrition from Cal-Berkeley) says that raw tomatoes and raw onions are 2 of the best things you can eat to stay healthy. He treats himself to McDonald's about once a month, and always orders extra tomatoes and extra onions on his burger.

In-n-out is the best drive thru, IMHO. I get the single "animal style" about once a year. Animal style means that the onions are grilled. Fries are really good there as well but that is unfortunately outside my allowed diet.

Actually it means much more. For the full "animal style" treatment, the burgers are fried in mustard, and pickles and extra spread are added, in addition to grilled onions.

You can also request "animal style" fries, in which case the fries are topped with cheese, extra spread, and grilled onions.

Both options are revolting, yet inexplicably popular. Some people compare animal-style fries with Canadian poutine.

Yeah, I have a neighbor who grows all sorts of exotic tomatoes. He brings us loads of em. We slice them up, and put some low fat Italian dressings in a bowl to marinate. Nothing better than fresh picked tomatoes to go with your main course.

Many may be surprised to learn that most individual items at McDonald's are actually not very bad for you- it is the meals that will kill you. Large fries and a soda on the side will turn any meal into a catastrophe. Without them, even a Big Mac is not a terrible choice for a meal (only 540 calories- although it isn't very nutritious on its own and has half of your day's recommended limit of saturated fat), so long as the rest of your day is balanced.

I've come to the conclusion that the best way to live is to make healthy choices in 95% of meals, so that the 5% of the time that I am not both feels especially satisfying and is not going to kill me. Another way to look at it: I eat fresh kale and chickpeas when I'm home alone, but beef brisket and lasagna when out with friends. Even then, I make sure that my stupid choices are not that stupid. I have become physiologically averse to nearly everything sweet, deep-fried or overly processed even on my let-loose meals.

I just realized that my entire post above was entirely :eek:fftopic:

I just hope that the woman is ok, even if she is a masochist.

I'm good right around 90-95% of the time....if I take the kids to McDonald's, I'll get a grilled chicken salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing that I use very sparingly. My standard dinner while I'm working is either grilled chicken kabaob or turkey on a wheat wrap with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions (no mayonnaise). My weaknesses are a good brunch that I'll treat myself to about once every other month, and Chinese food that I'll get about as often, so I'll have about one bad meal per month.

Make it two bad meals this month.....I picked up a friend at the airport today, and we're going to this place tomorrow night as thanks for the dreaded airport pickup; :approve:

To be honest calamares fritos and tostones usually round out the lunch:redface:

One day a week I allow myself something like this. Then like you say, work out harder!

In-N-Out, Fudruckers, 5 Guys...jeez, I've had all of these and if you think those are "good" burgers you should put a visit to Cowtown on your bucket list and eat at a burger joint called Kincaids, unbelievable out of this world burgers. The guy used to only be open 3 hours a day and you had a line out the door. He got smart and expanded. Anyhow they have a place even better than his (and his is one of the best) called Dutch's over by Texas Christian University (TCU) that is unbelievable. We've got Chubbys and Tommy's too for as a close 3rd and 4th place.

Any of you guys ever tried Whataburger?

Oh damn! Now you have me thinking about calamares and tostones!! I might just have to go visit this little restaurant that carries both Cuban and Spanish food. A variety of tapas dipped in olive oil is sounding good right now.

Damn, I'm gonna have to hit the weights super fuerte now! Darn you Carlos!

We don't have an Whataburger out here in Cali. I have noticed burger joints owned by Greek families make some damn good burgers though. The meat is top quality, and everything is fresh. Plus, the usually carry Gyros as well.

Three things Texas is dead serious about, beef, oil and music. As far as food goes we do Tex-Mex, burgers & steaks better than anywhere else I've found in the country (and I've searched). We suck at Cajun food which is odd because we're so close to Louisiana and our BBQ joints tend to use beef instead of pork which tends to mystify those from the East Coast, but that's how we roll.

We have a ton of Italian food joints and some are okay, none are "Chicago good". We also have a high population of Vietnamese and Thai people and they make some of the best food I've ever had. Weird that Fort Worth has some of the best Thai food in the U.S. but it's true.

Gyros and Greek food? We generally suck at that, I've had much better in D.C. As for California, when I spent a little over a week in Yontville and San Francisco I actually lost weight from how light people around there tend to eat. Lots of goat cheese, fish and lean cuts of pork, beef, etc. I also noticed the portions are a lot smaller (which is a good thing). People don't think twice about a 16oz. steak with a salad and bake potato with everything on it here in Texas. In San Francisco, the salad was the meal ;)
