Americans push back against ‘tip creep’ — ‘It’s time to take a stand,’ expert says. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/08/americans-have-tip-fatigue-resent-tip-creep.html Related video: BTW, CNBC has a mini documentary on everything. I am hooked.
I'm the opposite. I get frustrated when I CAN'T tip. The other day I was in a Cafe Rio and paid cash. I asked if there was a tip jar--their service was so complete and polite--but she said no, they only accept tips when you pay by card. I tip on service. But I only tip employees, not owners. So, I don't tip the guy who trims my trees because that's his business. But two guys who delivered by new washing machine from Lowes got a Jackson each. And so forth.... When I checked into a hotel in Vegas a few months ago, I slipped the check-in clerk a $20. I said nothing about it. He confirmed it was a gratuity and I just thanked him for helping us. That upgraded room (larger, with a view of the valley) was nice. The amounts of money involved in gratuities really aren't that much, and it's great when people appreciate it.
