She is unethical in her actions. I have just completed a mandatory ethics class at a client company and your story is typical of the case studies presented. Obviously, there should be one rule for all regarding office decoration.
Give her a suitable book from http://www.walkthetalk.com/

Actually, if you really want to piss her off. When she is away from her office, replace her angels with an autographed poster of the "Ayatollah kohmeni" :D :D

    To North,

Your boss sounds like a Clinton type of Democrat who doesn't like the military what so ever, who doesn't like us fighting terrorists, who didn't like us invading Iraq, and who probably does not like G.W. Bush as President who is not afraid to use the military.

I think we all know the type, and I'd be willing to bet that she is into the new age movement with all thoughs angels hanging around her office.

Let her know the "BLUE ANGLES" are in the Air Force, maybe that will change her mind!

A few things are happening here with your boss (and, no, you are definately not out of line):

    a.) She is a Bitch
b.) She did this arrogant gesture while you were in your office with someone else, meeting with them. To me, she either does not like the person that you are meeting with or she feels that, in some way, you are undermining her authority, so she sends a message by shoving it under the door while you are there with someone else. If that emblem was on the door for some time prior to doing that, why didn't she do the professional thing - ask you to take it of the door. Again, she did this to "assert her authority" and I think in some way you threaten her. Watch it, there may be more coming. I have a feeling that others in the office respect you more than her.
c.) Ripping the emblem off the door is disrespectful to you and your secretary, and a violation of your free speech, unless your company has restrictions on "door decorations". YOur boss has a level of immaturity that would irritate the hell out of me if I worked for her.

    Some suggestions:

a.) Put a picture of the World Trade Center on your door, with the air force emblem. I DARE HER to rip that off.

b.) Put a picture of the Devil on your door, to compliment her angels.

c.) Put a picture of an american soldier in Iraq on the door. If she gets angry, tell her that could also be a picture on an angel - a soldier that died in the line of duty to perserve the freedom that she has to rip things off your door.

d.) Tape a suicide bomber angel to her door.

e.) Tape a picture of GOD or Jesus to your door. They oversee the angels anyhow.

    or:

f.) Leave it alone - fate will take care of it!

    How's that????;)

Sounds to me like your boss is a member of the 5th column.
Angels strike me as an international symbol of wishful thinking and sentimentality, while the Air force is a symbol of good old imperial power. After all it was the RAF that saved Blighty from invasion by the Hun back in 39 not angels.

No particular reason. I just responded to your post about what you had on your walls.

Ask her to show you the policy on what's appropriate for doors. Otherwise it's just her and her opinion.

Instead of asking us laypeople, I suggest you ask:

    1) Your HR Department

    2) A labor lawyer

    3) A military office

I don't suppose North is that upset that he would take such drastic measures. If he were I am sure he would have already filed a grievance.

This just may be one of those pesky annoyances employees are subjected to from time to time. When I worked in Danville, Illinois at a substance abuse treatment facility, the facility director wanted all employees to park on the side of the building that was nothing but dirt. When it rained it was awful on shoes, pants legs, auto floor mats, etc. She wanted the paved lot for the clients.

That's just the way things are when one is not one's own boss!

He could hire an attorney to litigate the case for less than $250 an hour.

On second thought, I'm not sure how profitable it would be to hire an attorney. How much do you make an hour/year? ;)

Still, she should have not ripped it off the door. She should have asked North, whatever the policy is, to take it off the door if it bothered her. It was an unprofessional and immature act on her part, and a poor example of leadership and respect.

Re: Am I out of line?

I guess I should feel lucky.

I work for a local government in the state of Florida and my boss’s boss has the most decorated office in the whole department. (Got my tongue twisted there :D) He encourages everyone to decorate his/her office or cubicle. Sometimes he comes shopping to see what new things we have. He even gives us stuff too. The funny thing about it is that I work in the Human Resources department. He just tells us to stay within policy and if we have questions about it, then do not display it. We have Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard displayed everywhere. We have angels, prayers, psalms also.

She sounds like she has personal issues with the military. Check to see if there is a policy.

P.S. He proudly displays all his Air Force certificates, emblems and memorabilia too.

Is she the owner or just middle management? (or dating someone who is)
Is this a privately owned place or public?
What is the type of work done there?
Is this a christian run organization?
Do you constantly talk about your experiences or act as a recruiter at work?
Are there less than 50 employees there?
Are you part of a union?
Do you have a HR Department? HR policies?
What state do you live in? Have a right to work statute there?

As you can see - there are these and MANY more things to be answered before one can come up with a good strategy. However, here is my take on it:

I may get flamed here but what the hell .... she is the boss. She did nothing wrong (at least as far as federal statutes go). If you do not like it - you can always leave the company.

NOW, she may have shown bad taste and poor judgement. She may even be a bitch. However, it sounds like you threaten her and she wants to re-assert her authority. I would just put up with it - it sounds that even if you tried to have a calm discourse with her she will find that threatening.

    Well great luck!!
