    Dr.C:
    I must say I have not heard of the Dr. prior to Akamai and have also not heard him mentioned as a mill fighter. I think though the problem of quality is solely a concern of unaccredited DL schools and not the accredited.

    I think it would be great if Akamai turned out to be a quality school and became accredited and I wish the Dr. well if that is his goal. But as an average run from the mill DL student it simply is a waste of time to try to determine whether or not an unaccredited DL school offers quality. It is unknowable and about 10,000 graduates of CPU can attest to that.

    Well, of course, this is the argument for accreditation at its most basic. As I've said (and have many others) here in other threads many times, accreditation helps make life bearable when it comes to assessing an institution and its degrees. Without it, the burden falls to the prospective student to perform a kind and level of due diligence to determine credibility that just isn't reasonable under ordinary circumstances. But it is logical that if said due diligence were performed, it would, in fact, be possible to make it knowable. But at what cost?

    And remember, that only addresses the legitimacy and value questions. Even with said due diligence, we still have the problem of utility. So what if the prospective student, the student, and then finally the graduate, becomes convinced of the school's quality! It won't mean a damned thing if the potential employer; or the subsequent school to which the graduate presents the degree as requisite to a higher degree; or the subsequent school into which the student tries to transfer the credits, isn't also convinced... and, therefore, doesn't recognize/accept it/them.

    Accreditation is a form of shorthand in a sense. A playing field leveler. It saves untold numbers of people -- from the prospective student, to the employer from which said student-turned-graduate eventually retires -- untold amounts of time trying to figure out what's what. It says to everyone who comes in contact with the credential in any way for entire lifetimes that it meets certain bare minimums of quality of which everyone may be assured without anyone having to perform their own due diligence to make sure it's so. Without that kind of utility, someone's time is gonna' get wasted... probably many someones, many times. The someones who won't let others do that to them are the ones who figure out that the easiest thing to do is to throw the resume or application of the unaccredited degree holder straight into the trash and not give it a moment's thought thereafter.

    I think the main reason of the failure of Unacc DL school was from the first day appointing un-accredited Agent. I had received many brochure from Akamai and it look like all was indicated that recognision from here and there wasn't these confuse or misled people after read through the brochure. 60 days money guarantee back, this is something like a promotion of cheap product selling method-under University method of selling this should not be a marketing way to sell the product. You are selling knowledge and not selling equipment-To me I personally fell that your education was too cheap by using this method. I think no need to name the Agent, Dr will know who's who. What am I understand from the Akamai website was stated that "Dr"Ben was a mentor, will that mean he is also supervising students and if so we this is very questionable from what we found from his credential. What Wan said Rubbish in and Rubbish Out idea was true and from my point of view it should be RUbbish substandard in and Rubbishs Sub-sub-sub standard out.
    From his pass history record was shown he was running Southern Pacific University and Commonwealth OPen University and it was relect who's who of this person and we really not sure why the Unaccredited school was terminate him from offering their programs due to many undiscloser issue (I think) happen from his agressiveness and eager to make money. Before that we had see "Dr"Ben was advertise heavily to market Southern Pacific University, Commonwealth OPen University and now Akamai.
    Dr C should aware on that issue and if Dr C known it earlier probably this thing won't happen. Please visit the Southern Pacific University website and you will know the detail or http://www.spuni.edu/newsdetails.asp?id=30

    Okay, let's get the history straight on Akamai. I very well could be mistaken because I'm counting on my own sometimes wrong memory of something that wasn't all that important to me.

    Isn't Akamai essentially a reincarnation of Greenwich University? GU opened in Hawaii then moved to Norfolk island and claimed accreditation from Norfolk. They seemed to have support of the officials there but many in the greater Austrailian educational system thought otherwise. Eventually Austrailia booted them out and they said they were going to go to California. That didn't work out and they reopened in Hawaii with the new name.

    Also is Norfolk Island the same place that DR. Bear would occasionally request the moderators to reinstate access to the DegreeInfo servers, apparently without success? (Presumably the ISP at Norfolk Island was used in some kind of internet attack against DI therefore the banning.)

    Someone has to remember the proper history? I bet that George can straighten me out or perhaps verify?

    Hardly a reincarnation of Greenwich since Dr. C and Greenwich did not part company amicably.

    Dr. Capogrossi responded to many questions in a Degreeboard.com interview including questions about the Akamai/Greenwich relationship.

    7. Some people have suggested that Akamai is a re-incarnation of Greenwich University, which was an institution known both for its innovation and for its tangled history. What is the relationship (if any) between Akamai and Greenwich?

    Special thanks to Dr. John Bear for his response and consideration of my questions as appropriate;

    We now know the answer to the 2 questions;

    1) Dr. Lee got his PhD from Southern Pacific University (Xtra post) and weather earned or honorary is irrelevant as SPU is a diploma mill.
    2) Doctor of University degree by another diploma mill Commonwealth Open University.

    A great example of quality partnership of AKAMAI UNIVERSITY IN ASIA……

    Now the following remaining questions I believe only Dr. Capogrossi can answer;

    1) Where this person got his professorship and on what basis?
    2) Has this person ever taught a course? if yes where and when?
    3) Does this person possess a bachelor degree? If yes from where?

    It’s a pity that Akamai University CHOSE to associate with Dr. Ben Lee even after knowing that the guy is a crook of highest order. The questions remains unanswered and again only Dr. Capogrossi can answer these;

    1) Why Akamai University a non-profit organization decided to associate with a for-profit company EDS Academy in Malaysia owned by Ben Lee (To call him a professor or a Dr. is insult to the titles). EDS has no education license or endorsement from education ministry and can be considered operating illegally in Malaysia.

    If Dr. Capogrossi intentions are genuine then he should be working with a trust or charity or some non-profit institute.

    2) Why Akamai University is blacklisted by National Accreditation Board of Malaysia?

    I hope to receive straight answers from Dr. Capogrossi and not an essay about the mission, vision, quality, etc which is out of context and he should not be preaching about things that he or Akamai is not practicing.

    Krippner's a pretty big name in more alternative psychology circles. If Akamai offers students a chance to work with Krippner, that's definitely a plus in my opinion.

    Unfortunately Krippner doesn't mention Akamai in his vita, where he gives his current institutional affiliation as Saybrook. I didn't see Akamai mentioned on his website at all.

    http://www.stanleykrippner.com/

    I think that CIIS' early evolution was very different than Akamai's has been so far, more in the 'establish your reputation and then start offering your degrees' pattern. It was created as the non-degree-ganting American Academy of Asian Studies in 1951 and gathered an all-star core of participants that included people like prominent Stanford Indic languages professor Frederick Spiegelberg and Alan Watts. It became the California Institute of Asian Studies in 1968, became a CA-approved graduate school in 1974, adopted the name California Institute of Integral Studies in 1980 and was regionally accredited in 1981.

    There's a truly fascinating account of CIIS' early history written by one of CIIS' more prominent current professors here:

    http://www.well.com/user/davidu/ciishistory.html

    Maybe, if Akamai can keep from losing its soul to the dark side and manage to focus on some academic purpose beyond making lots of money quickly.

    CIIS was strong in its early days because it didn't try to offer more than it could realistically deliver and because it was motivated by and tightly focused on its participants' personal interests in Asian philosophy and religion. More recently CIIS seems to have degenerated a little bit as it has gradually lost that focus and embraced all kinds of trendy politico-cultural fluff.

    As of this posting, Akamai University has withdrawn all public advertisement of its degree programs across Malaysia and Vietnam. We shall refrain from placing new public advertisements for the time being.

    This will permit Akamai to build greater assurances of quality and integrity in our distance learning programs in those countries. It will further demonstrate our willingness accept advisement and will provide us the needed time to assure the expected quality measures are in place.

    We are looking into the situation of the unauthorized and unapproved classified advertisement that was placed online last year. No individuals formally associated with Akamai University or otherwise directed to act on our behalf placed this promotional ad. The presence of five typographical errors and the lack of the required disclaimer mark this ad as very problematic. We are taking actions to address this situation immediately and directly and to confront the individuals responsible.

    The Malaysia Public Service Department was in error in stating they have recognized our degrees in Malaysia. We acknowledge this as an error. We intend to take all needed actions to ultimately gain the respect of the governmental officials in Malaysia and Vietnam. Our intent is to serve the educational needs of those communities and we shall take the necessary steps to assure our integrity.

    I must disagree with you on this. I really believe there is no way of knowing what the intentions of the unaccredited are and one can point to Columbia Pacific as a perfect example. It had all the trappings with an Ivy league grad president, licensure utility,state approval with talk of RA IIRC and it burst into flames. I'm sure all the grads did much research into the decision as they defend it tirelessly now.

    It is perhaps the simplest solution to the problem but the average DL student is not equipped to make any kind of value judgement as to the quality of the unaccredited. But it is all a moot point anyway as the utility is so limited even if the school is sincere. And that seems to be what you are saying. Some licensing exams seem to still allow them though. Throw in the ODA and other state lists and you've got a real time waster on your hands.

    Dear Dr C,
    You are having war without awareness and the war will never end unless something happen especially what are the immediate action that you going to take. We saw many advertisemnt in local whereby done by EDS and during the advertisemnt why you had never inform and why you do not know and if you had notice it why you don't stop it. It shown that it is something behind your interest. I would said MONEY is the main priority. This had turn the Agent to become offering the study like running a BUSINESS. And from my mesage that showing that the 60 DAYS MONEY BACK GUARANTEE----> What is this. Please answer the audients, do this work and if work this is something we can consider a misleding case due to you had using this idea to attract students and from this gimit that the student take the advantage to enrol with the university with prior notice of university was not accredited. You said ten thousand time or declare time thousand time in the URL also useless due to the tactic that use by your agent was totally unfound. What about that currently advert news had happen, the current student can look for any REFUND from the University or NOT? The local EDS I am sure are now considering RUN RUN RUN and you have to SOLVE SOLVE SOLVE.
    Sometime we also saw the advertismeent was associate you with the Institute of Profeesional Managers & Administrators, UK and The Institute of Management Specialists UK. This is one of the strategies that had been used by them during they associated with SPU. Eventually anyone call up they recommend SPU or COU(During old time) and now Akamai. They had advertise shown that these Body are International Recognised Qualification and eventually convince to Akamai and this will based on what RECOGNITION? An INCORPOARATION eventually. In Malaysia we also got a lot of Inc that can be found overnight. Just pay 2,000 Malaysia Ringgit or USD 530.00 sound very cheap. Personally I am not sure how is how in Hawaii but I think forming a company is almost the same procedure doing it in Malaysia but not with University title.

    All very interesting, Wan Salleh, but why will you not reveal -- either in the other thread where you've been twice asked, or here, or at least somewhere in these fora -- for whom you are pimpi... er... I mean... for whom you are an agent? Whom do you represent? (And, again, I caution: Be truthful, because I may already know.)

    I mean, if we must endure your attacks on Akamai -- some of which may very well be deserved, for all I know -- the least you could do is reveal your vested interest so that we may also take that into consideration when pondering your arguments.

    For whom are you an agent? Hmm?

    Wan Salleh makes that difficult, though, doesn't he. Perhaps we'd care more about where he stands, if we knew where he sits.

    Well, of course, this is really at the heart of it, isn't it. We're talking about Malaysia and Viet Nam, of all places. Maybe we could all do with a bit of a brief reality orientation...

    Singapore is one of the cleanest, most relatively prosperous and crime-free (and also most repressive toward gays... but I digress) country in that neck of the woods. Just ask any Singaporian police officer where whatever crime they do have is coming from and he'll tell you it's people coming into Singapore from the Johor province of Malaysia.

    And anyone who is seriously into creating e-commerce, or software download, or membership, or web hosting, or domain registration, or any of a number of other types of web sites that are able to accept credit cards will tell you that their anti-fraud procedures include summarily blocking all traffic from IP addresses in places like Malaysia and Viet Nam, just to name two. There's more credit card fraud per square foot originating from places like Malaysia and Viet Nam than almost anywhere else. Believe me, I know.

    Am I saying that Malaysians or Vietnamese people are inherently dishonest or engaging in criminal activity? Of course not. What I'm saying is that the problems with criminal activity and dishonesty originating from those countries are of such proportions that, notwithstanding the majority of people there who are decent and honest and honorable, it's simply easier for Westerners who build web sites that accept credit cards, for example, to summarily block access to the lot of them and just be done with it. And we do... without losing a minute's sleep over it. Not one minute.

    Excessive chargebacks due to fraud (or, no matter what the reason, really) first shoots-up the discount rate and transaction fees that the web merchant must pay for the privilege of being able to accept credit cards; and increasing those fees is among the last steps the credit card processing banks and agencies take before closing the web merchant's account altogether... and thereby killing his ability to accept credit cards at all! So the stakes are pretty high.

    It's easier to just block access to the IP addresses which ARIN, through RIPE, assigns to the entire countries or continents from which such fraud tends to originate. Harsh? Yes... but also effective. Better the web merchant is able to keep his ability to accept credit cards cost effectively than sweat the irritation of the small percentage (by comparison) of honest customers from those countries who can't access the web site (or at least the part of it where credit cards are accepted) because they can't seem to rein-in the criminal behavior and activities of their neighbors.

    "Stop your country from being such an unmitigated repository of credit card abuse and fraud," I would say to them if I could, "and we'll happily open-up our web sites to your credit card transactions, just like like we do for other parts of the world."

    So, though I've never ranted about it around here before this moment; and though I know it makes me sound like some kind of bigoted, racist jerk (which isn't what it's about at all, of course... but someone will make the allegation anyway), I must say that every time people come here and start making a big whoop-tee-doo about what's going on in places like Viet Nam and Malaysia I think to myself, "Who gives a rat's ass!"

    Cold and indifferent am I, Yoda? Perhaps. But if the problem that Akamai is having getting good, decent, honorable and reliable agency in those places is any indicator; and if Wan Salleh is representative of the caliber of agents available in same, then it seems prudent for such as Akamai to consider another approach altogether. Don't get me wrong: Quality, affordable education is sorely needed in those countries, and I am for whatever will bring it there with integrity. But "integrity" is the operative word, here, isn't it.

    Whenever Dr. Bear posts "Comes now XYZ University" there is cause for concern. And after reading the above thread it is easy to see why. Faculty with numerous less than wonderful degrees and you know where this is leading.And with all due respect to Uncle and to Dr.C it appears to me that Dr.C has answered none of the questions asked of him by the posters. I did however hear a cozying up to Dr.Bear , a passing the buck about a Malaysian evil super agent tarnishing the school's good name and something about advancing the human condition.
