    Hello!

I stumbled upon a quite questionable institute that claimed to be accredited by an even more questionable accreditor. These guys claimed that a LOT of - reputable - universities were accredited by them; of course, only to give themselves a reputable facade.
I know little about the U.S. legal system. What is the legal position, can I accredit a university against its will?

    Best regards,

Sure. Realistically, the worst that can happen is that someone at the real institution finds out and their lawyer sends you a C&D.

Bogus accreditors do this all the time. They usually start with the Ivy Schools (or equivalent elsewhere) and work their way down. Not a rewarding job, sending C&D letters to Cyberspace, Pakistan or remote outposts in the Indian Ocean or the South Pacific.

A dark and lonely job -- but, right @SteveFoerster somebody's got to do it.... :)

I'm not a lawyer, but usually C&D is what I think they call "adequate remedy" for things like this - HOWEVER, I think in order to have "standing" they institution would have to demonstrate some kind of harm, damage, or loss of revenue or reputation in order to have a real case.
