New Discussion Forum

DistanceDegree.net lasted as long as it did because it allowed a fair amount of dissent. This new forum clearly does not intend to allow any. I registered a few days ago using, as usual, my real name. I had no intention of posting but I wanted to ensure that no one could spoof my user name (I have done this on several other forums as well). The registration “took,” but the administrator (who claims no knowledge of DegreeInfo) has still not activated my account (which would allow me to post and send private messages). In other words, the powers that be at the other forum see no problem in allowing a poll and posts that malign a real individual, but choose not to let that individual respond. A discussion forum with such a brazen disregard for fairness will not last long.

In fact, in this thread, the administrator of the new forum has stated the following:

• I am not very familiar with the issues at DegreeInfo. However, I do hope they do not follow anyone here. We manage other forum boards and know all to well that some people do not know how to disagree without being disagreeable.

• Hey guys, let me clarify. I know nothing about Degreeinfo except what you have brought here. Nor, do I really care. I do not have the desire nor the time to care or know about that site. I manage several forums and have a selfish reason for establishing this one. Forums draw traffic!

Therefore, the administrator knows nothing about DegreeInfo but he doesn’t want anyone from this forum posting on his forum (although DWCox and Jimmy Clifton seemed to have been welcomed with open arms) in spite of the fact that he blatantly wants to generate traffic? Go figure. I predict the new forum will die a quick and ignoble death.

I don’t know if he is the administrator of the forum, but all I could find out about Glen L. VanWormer is that he has some kind of affiliation with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Maybe he'll knock on my door some day.

Glen VanWormer lives in Ovid, NY, which looks like farm country judging by the aerial photo on MapQuest.

There's a Glen Van Wormer associated with an Internet company called Clarity Connect, Inc. out of Ithaca. That's only a 26 mile commute. Or if he's a Clarity Connect customer, it's just his local server.

What made me smile is that this Glen Van Wormer is renowned for sending "business opportunity" spam. People complain about him on Google groups. The businesses look for all the world like pyramid schemes. Is it the same guy?

I had signed on in April, using the login name "DityDuck." (It's a family joke.) I posted once and then left it alone. Today I went back and posted a few more times, rather tamely. I just pointed out some facts--completely staying away from any personalities. It took NO TIME for someone named "Jay" to call what I had to say "garbage" and that it changed all of the time. (What I posted was innocuous, but it was obviously me; I didn't try to hide myself or claim I was someone else.)

Needless to say, the experience lived down to my expectations. A thrill for mill shills, I guess.

 

MRinger, you're the one who called Len a "big fat hairy liar." Some people consider "liar" to be one of the worst insults possible. Certainly it's grounds for a libel suit unless you can prove it.

Len's exact words were: "However my dear friend, you will find that israel, mringer, piratesmac, bear, bill etc. have joined already under a different name and are simply lying in wait for the right moment to destabilize this forum". He didn't say you had attacked him there already or even posted there already. I don't know why you think he did.

 

Yes, I did call him a Liar, because in my opinion he has lied to me about knowing things. And to say that I have signed up under a different name than what i normally use when i have only signed up under my own name could also be construed as a lie. Therefore I feel I am correct in saying that Len is lying... And you are correct, he didn't say that I had already attacked him, I misread what he had posted, and for that I apologize.

This has nothing to do whether you signed up under a different name or not, and you know it.

Fact 1 : You are now hiding behind your fact of "And to say that I have signed up under a different name than what i normally use when i have only signed up under my own name could also be construed as a lie. Therefore I feel I am correct in saying that Len is lying". This is after the fact, your insult was before the fact and therefore is a totally different issue.

Fact 2 : You used a public forum to insult me by calling me a big, fat, hairy liar, even without proof.

Fact 3 : I never insulted you personally on a public forum as you have insulted me.

Fact 4 : You posted this insult on DegreeInfo.com, and DegreeInfo.com did not so much as even warn you or remove that insulting post. It is therefore accepted that DegreeInfo.com either condoned that thread, or agreed with that thread.

I accept your apology on "And you are correct, he didn't say that I had already attacked him, I misread what he had posted, and for that I apologize", but I certainly would like to see an apology forthcoming from you on Fact 2.

I don't have to spell out the consequences to both yourself and DegreeInfo.com on this; MarkIsrael has already stated it. If you think I am not serious, try me.

I will not apologize for fact 2. It is my Opinion and I am standing by it. 2ndly why is this such a big issue now? You didn't seem so worried about it in the first place. Now after Mark has rightfully pointed it out, you are wanting apologies. You truly puzzle me.

I merely commented that I thought that theirs was to be a "kinder gentler" board.

 

Wrong move. This from their new Posting Guidelines and Restrictions:

I've just had a string of exchanges with Glen. Interesting guy.

He's set up collegehints.com for one reason, to make money. Nothing wrong with that, just philosophically a very different place from where DegreeInfo is and always has been.

I pointed out the problems with K-W and he initially claimed that it was simple ignorance, that he knew nothing about them and therefore didn't want to pass judgement, and that he made almost no money off of them. He said if there was a real issue, that ethics would definitely take over.

But later, he also said that they were a "valued advertiser" who had supported him for a long time and that their rep was "a nice, ethical person" and that was why he didn't want to drop them.

I provided him with information from various sources on why continuing to advertise K-W is doing a huge disservice to his readers. We'll see how important ethics are in comparison to cash.
