  1. It occurs to me that there should be at least one picture of a student in pajamas (try Googling for distance learning pajamas) and you'll see how often this image is invoked in articles about distance learning.

Actually, how about a sleep-deprived parent with baby on one shoulder, laptop computer on lap, texts and papers spread on the coffee table, and a quizzical expression. "Whattaya mean, file not found?"

How about a stereogram cover in which you see a diploma if you stare at it until you're bug-eyed.

Of the three, I prefer #2. The first one looks like it should be the cover of "Walston's Guide". Is Dr. Walston going to put John Bear on the cover of his guide's next edition? That would be fascinating.

Based on the big smile he's wearing, I don't think I want to know.

    Thanks John..

I find the third to distant, too passive.
I like the first one; it's focused and attention getting.
But the middle one is distinctly appealing on two levels--multiple ages of people, both sexes too.

It gets my vote, ultimately, because of the happy, smiling, attractive blond woman--it makes one feel good about THAT particular objective--and isn't that what it's all about?

This brings to mind the infamous banner ads Sheila did early on for MIGS: "Earn your doctorate in your underwear!"

Fortunately, after someone commented on degreeinfo how tacky and unprofessional the ad was, she promptly removed it.

  7. The cover of the 14th edition shows a bear sitting on a pedestal and reading a copy of Bears' Guide. I showed the cover to my 5-year-old daughter, and asked her what she saw. Her interpretation: "a bear sitting on the potty reading a magazine."

So if John wants to stop using the bear, why not a diverse set of people (young/old, male/female, etc.) sitting on the potty reading magazines?

I too enjoy the demented Bear cover. Considering that (as I understand it) most of the sales for Bear's Guide are over the net, the new cover might work better. That being the case, I went for number one because the pen makes the fellow look more studious. However, if most distance learning degrees are earned by females, why doesn't the cover feature a female?

John: Actually the answer seems to be yes. Photo session scheduled for next month. I've asked if I should show up in cassock, yarmulke, Hutterite stuke-collecting frock, or my Tuvan shaman's hat.

No doubt about it, John, you must wear the genuine Dalai Lama T-shirt. Or course Ric will then have to begin a Department of Tibetan Studies at CES. :D
