Looking for a degree in music related fields

Hey guys!

I just registered because I can't find any online/distance degree that is right for me. I'm from Germany and studying at the FernUniversität in Hagen (a university in Germany that only offers distance degrees and certificates). So if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll try to help you

Now back to the topic I want to get a distance/online degree in a music related field, e.g. music, music production, audio engineering... I already found Berklee, Full Sail and Atlantic International University, but they are much too expensive for a student from Germany like me. Do you know any other online degree programs? It would also be great if I could do the exams online or in a study centre in Germany.

You haven't said what level you'd want this degree to be (Bachelors, Masters, etc.) but you can look here:

If you peruse the site you'll see they also offer a BA in Multimedia. It's not an engineering degree but is found in the Faculty of Arts. Good luck.

I'm sorry I forgot the level. I'm looking for Bachelor degrees.
Thank you for the link. The program is not exactly what I was looking for (due to drawing and visual modules) but at least an alternative. I'll keep that in mind.

Charter Oak State College

Charter Oak has a Bachelor of General Studies (120 credit hours) with a concentration of 36 credit hours in either Music History or Music Theory. And they take 87 credit hours from a 2-year (junior or community) college.

Here's how the concentration is filled out:

You can find other info about their other course requirements--the usual math, history, etc.--on their site.

Charter Oak doesn't offer all of the required music courses, so you would have to find them elsewhere. It's the same case with Thomas Edison.

Fort Hays State University offers an online Bachelor of General Studies with a concentration in Music. They only charge $186.50 per credit hour.

Yeah, the options seem to be quite limited. Valley City has nice program but it is designed for those who are performance majors and since the performance classes are not offered on-line that means a great deal of the heavy lifting is going to be done by the student at their home location, which sort of defeats the purpose of having an on-line degree. Thomas Oaks has a good (on paper) theory program but it's not cheap at $1000 per three credit course for out of state residents. Honestly, the one at Fort Hayes is a joke. Basically, it is "music appreciation". It's cheap, no doubt, but one isn't going to learn any real music skills there.

 

How about this Music Technology program? RA school, completely by distance. I am indebted to Jonathan Whatley for mentioning it in an earlier thread.

Thanks for the link. They use a quarter system so tuition works out to be $6300 a year for a 12 credit load, which isn't too bad for out of state residents but not all the great either. That is roughly comparable to what in-state tuition is at a major university in my state. Further, the distance ed part really isn't that appealing. While they do offer a wide-range of music courses many of them are not available on-line. So when I pick the program apart it is basically the same thing as the Fort Hayes program--only with some computer software thrown in. One isn't really developing any music skills as such.

 

I realize that fully - but the OP was looking for a music-related program -production, audio engineering etc. That's why I mentioned it.

I realize that fully. Even in terms of music technology it's a substandard degree, and I don't mean because it's a community college degree. The degree requires 90 quarter hours of which 43 are general education that have nothing to do with music. Of the remaining 47 credits only 20 quarter hours deal with music technology, the rest are simply filler courses like history of music and intro to film music. So even though it is titled an AA in Music Technology only 25% (five courses) are actual music technology courses. Normally for a major in a particular field 40%-50% of the courses have to be in that specialty. So the AA degree just isn't up to snuff, at any level.
