You are correct and it is unfortunate, since many people equate for-profit universities with those that are part of large publicly traded corporations (e.g. Phoenix, Kaplan, Walden, American Intercontinental, Strayer, Capella, etc.) The private proprietary schools (many of which are family-owned), do not act like their wall street counterparts.

This is an interesting distinction that I don't think has come up in the past. Can you give us a (partial) list of schools that fit into this other category?

A few that would fall under the banner of the family-owned proprietary schools that are regionally accredited would be Keiser University, Herzing University and Sullivan University.

True, although I'm not sure that Keiser University is the example I'd use to argue that family-owned schools don't act like publicly-traded ones.

At the mention of Sullivan University I remembered a plan I once made . . . to be implemented once I come to my senses . . . I will earn an MBA with a concentration in Hospitality Management and I will then take myself off to the Yucatan Peninsula where I will become the head of a very large, lush vacation resort hotel. It has to be on the ocean though. Some of those places just have huge luxurious pools but I want the ocean and the sun and the heat. (this is just me thinking about the fact that the summer is over :()

If you live were I think you do, it is still sunny (minus the trace of rain the last couple of days) and hot.

Thread Hijack for a story. I had a professor who graduated from the University of Chicago about the time football was eliminated. Being a refined southern belle she finshed with a BA, MA and went on to teach, cause that's what women did back then. As she approached retirement age she confided to me that she had two plans for retirement. The first was that she would commit the worst crime that she could without harming anyone so that the state could take care of her for the rest of her life. Not being the criminal type she settled for plan two. She loved to travel and managed to convince a publisher to pay for her retirement travels and in return she would write enticing reviews of each of her destinations, including some rather nice tropical resorts. Several decades later I was at a DOIM conference and noticed a young lady with the same last name. As coincidence would have it she was the granddaughter of my professor. In our discussion I found out that her grandmother had died while on travel to one of these tropical locals. (I'm thinking it beats the hell out of a nursing home.)

So, I think hanging out at at a hotel in the Yucatan might be a successful plan. Hard to beat getting paid to look at the beach and sipping on funny drinks with umbrellas. I say go for it... and don't forget to write.

I will be participating as an on-site evaluator in an accreditation site visit in October, so I am sure that everyone will understand that it would be unprofessional for me to make any comment.

I don't know where you're going with this but I'm pretty sure I don't know anyone named Earl.

That seems like an excellent point. At least for me, I am studying with AJU, and I don't think the experience is much if at all similar to some of the operational behaviors people are describing with Phoenix and the like.

AJU is great right! Its a small school and they seem to care about you and not your money. I'm in my last set of classes for my AS in CJ. What program are you in?

Ok, I get it. We in the Northeast don't spend a lot of time thinking about hurricanes. The forecast for Sunday is "sunny, temps in the 70's"

I'm still there at Ocean Beach.

Like the Dixie Chicks wrote . . . "Good-bye Earl!"

Those properties must be worth a skagillion dollars now. It's a beautiful place.

Most people don't know this but New London is really a nice little city. Connecticut College and the US Coast Guard Academy live there. They've got a cute downtown area with some nice shops and restaurants and a totally killer coastline. Just down the street is the US Navy Submarine base in Groton. Just the sort of place where you might, on the right day, find a welding engineer.

Make sure you monitor the situation. Thursday and Friday could cause some damage before Sunday.
