A good plan might be to get what one can from this degree and then take a few local courses to fill any gaps. It does look like good prep to teach philosophy and religion survey courses.

For those desiring to write a thesis, there's the Master of Philosophy program.

Responding to the inquiry by the original poster, youmay want to take a peek at the Masters degree program (MPhil) offered by the Philosophy Dept. at the University of Wales - Lampeter. It has a decent rep, good name recognition, reasonably priced and offers the opportunity to move on to the Doctoral level should that ever be of interest.

Thank you all for your thoughts and discussions, I appriciate them vey much. I might go with Lampert, I am not sure yet though. They are merging with another college for financial reasons. I am still looking for other schools.

A little slow on the uptake, here, but I'm a newbie to the forums (or fora?).

I think you make excellent points concerning philosophy of history and philosophy of mind. In my program, we also had a couple of philo of religion grad seminars.

The lack of thesis rather bothers me and it appears that there's really nothing to take its place, not even directed research of some sort.

    Madurai Kamaraj Masters

Affordable alternatives in higher education such as the masters from Madurai Kamaraj University are indeed a welcome development. However, one should bear in mind that holders of foreign degrees often need to establish their educational equivalency. When I began teaching in the New York City public schools in the late eighties, my masters degree in English literature from the University of Peshawar was equated to a B.A. from the US. Since my University of Peshawar BA is a two-year degree, that seems fair enough. I believe that the Indian University Grants Commission and the government of Tamil Nadu no longer allow distance M.Phils or Ph.Ds. I do not know whether this restriction applies to IGNOU.

    Hello everyone. . . I'm a newbie!

I'm interested in pursuing an online masters degree in philosophy. Thus far, I've identified the following online colleges/universities:
    1) University of New England, Armidale (Australia)
    2) University of Wales at Lampeter
    3) University of Illinois at Springfield (individual option in liberal arts with concentration on philosophy)
    4) Holy Apostles College
    5) I am not considering South Africa university or Sophia university
    6) The Indian based university mentioned within this thread

If anyone is familiar with any other colleges and universities that offer an online MA in philosophy, please inform me!

I hope to land a basic teaching position at a local community college. . . is that even possible with a MA degree in philosophy?

    THANKS

    decisions. . . decisions. . .

    Hello everyone. . . I'm a newbie!

I'm considering the pursuit of an online Masters degree in philosophy with the hope of teaching at a community college. Based on my research thus far, the options are limited to the following:

    1) University of New England, Armidale (Australia)
    2) University of Wales at Lampeter
    3) University of Illinois at Springfield (individual option in liberal arts with concentration on philosophy)
    4) Holy Apostles College
    5) The Indian college mentioned above in this thread

    Are there any other options?

Also, I wonder if American community colleges accept Masters degrees conferred by the above mentioned universities. . . do they possess the appropriate accred . . . ?

    Thanks!

I'm also looking for decent philosophy program that offered completely online. Based on my research thus far, I found what I consider to be three relatively solid programs: 1) University of Whales - Lampeter, 2) University of South Africa, and 3) University of New England, Australia. Are there any additional programs that are offered completely online, besides those mentioned in this thread? Any further info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

  11. I can tell you that the University of New England is a very good university. It is one of the best known distance education specialists in this country.
