    Other Possibilities

Here are some other AACSB-accredited options:

PhD for Executives - University of Glasgow

    BEM Bordeaux Managemenet School

http://www.bem.edu/en (site is down right now)

I was directed to these programs by the AACSB Best Biz Schools web site:

    http://www.bestbizschools.com/doctorate/search.asp

Another interesting doctorate is offered by the IE Business School:

    http://dba.ie.edu/

The University of Warwick PhD was also listed as a part-time program by AACSB, but PhD students need to be in full-time residence for at least one year. All of the above programs require varying levels of residencies/visits to the university, so they cannot be considered to be fully distance/online programs.

Wasn't there a time when the doctorate wasn't within the scope of AACSB accreditation? AACSB-accredited schools could offer it, of course, but the degree wasn't technically accredited by AACSB.

Or am I just making that up?

    Hi Rich,

I thought that AACSB and EQUIS award accreditation to the business schools as a whole, not the individual programs. However, I think that AMBA accredits individual programs (i.e. MBA, MBM, DBA). Does anyone else have any insights?

Thanks, Michael, but that's not quite what I'm saying. I'm suggesting that at one time, AACSB accreditation, while applied to a university's business school as a whole, did not extend to its doctoral programs. That's different that what you inferred from my post.

I'm asking the question because Andy's post seems to imply a school's doctorate in business matters regarding accreditation, when I though AACSB only went through the master's.

Has anyone contact AACSB to ask?

It's clear from their website that doctoral programs are now in scope. But, IIRC, they didn't used to be.

    Moot point, really.

I believe that your statement is correct. Additionally, it looks like AMBA is in the business of accrediting DBA programs. This list so far is:

    Aston Business School
    The Aston DBA
Full Time / Part Time / Distance Learning

    CENTRUM Católica
    The Centrum DBA
    Part Time

    Grenoble Ecole de Management
    Grenoble DBA
    Part Time

    Grenoble DBA China (Tongji University)
    Part Time

    Hong Kong Polytechnic University
    Doctor of Business Administration
    Part Time
    Doctor of Management
    Part Time

    Kingston Business School
    The Kingston DBA
    Part Time

    Maastricht School of Management
    Doctor of Business Administration
    Part Time

EQUIS & AMBA Accreditation for Faculty Positions?

I was perhaps premature in including the BEM Bordeaux Management School, as there is no reference to doctoral programs on its web site. However, I stumbled upon the following PhD program, which is a consortium of six management schools in France (including BEM):

    http://www.phd-ecricome.com/index.php?page=7

This PhD is an innovative way of achieving economies of scale in regards to research capacity and supervision. There is a similar joint PhD in Business Administration which is based in Montreal and includes the following schools: McGill, HEC Montreal, Concordia and UQAM.

I realize that the AACSB accredited doctorate is still the best way to get a tenure track position at an AACSB-accredited business school. However, I am starting to see faculty position postings which allow for other international accreditations (e.g. EQUIS), especially for higher demand areas such as accounting and finance. Are degrees from EQUIS and AMBA accredited institutions starting to become more accepted in academic circles? I am interested in pursuing a doctorate related to accounting (but I can't go full-time) and I welcome your input!

    Thanks,

I noticed that the Kennesaw DBA offers a major (focus?) in accounting.

    That's certainly very exciting.
However, its residency requirements just turn me off.

Michael this is a great find, and I commend you for your hard work. Now, the question is that if a student gets a PhD thru this program, would it be considered AACSB accredited, considering that at least two of these 6 schools (BEM and ESCEM) are AACSB accredited? The fees for this programme is very reasonable, at only 12,000 euros (around $16K) for the ENTIRE program. Also, this program looks like they would be able to accomodate distance ed.

Additionally, correct me if i am wrong, but the joint PhD of Montreal based universities is only offered full-time, and has no distance ed component.

    Hi Jayzee,

Thanks for acknowledging my contribution, although I have a long way to go to match Ted Heiks in terms of online research!

In regards to your question, I am not sure as to whether graduates of this program can claim AACSB accreditation for the doctorate. At a minimum, the program is EQUIS accredited. I guess it would depend on whether the PhD is awarded by the consortium or by the "home" university. Considering how attractive the program seems in terms of price and potential ability to study at a distance, it would be worth asking the school(s).

You are correct in that the joint PhD in Montreal is not available via distance education. I was just trying to point out that at least two French consortiums have been created to award PhD degrees in business, which has its advantages in terms of expanding course and research options. With the Montreal joint PhD, I believe that students register at a "home" university and receive their degree from that university, but they have the freedom to take courses and seek research supervision from any of the four universities. Two of the universities, Concordia and HEC Montreal, are AACSB accredited (HEC is triple accredited!). I think that both Concordia and HEC allow part-time study, but students would likely have to live in Montreal (a great city by the way!). McGill does not have any business accreditation, but its international reputation is above reproach. As well, McGill only allows full-time study. I don't know about UQAM in terms of accreditation and study modes.

I would welcome any input in terms of whether EQUIS or AMBA accredited doctorates are acceptable in terms of seeking a tenure-track position at a school with a recognized accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA).

Michael, it actually states on one of the pages on the Ecricome website that the PhD will be awarded by the consortium. Creating a consortium like this is actually a wonderful idea, considering the amount of resources and faculty expertise that becomes available. Two out of 6 univ in the consortium are AACSB accredited. Perhaps if your Phd supervisor is from one of those 2 AACSB universities, maybe then you can claim AACSB accreditation. Indeed, I would not only ask the schools, but it makes sense to ask AACSB about it as well.

Regarding AACSB or not, please look at my previous posts. I don't want this thread to turn into AACSB versus Drama (sorry, non-aacsb :) accreditation.

There are quite a few Canadian universities that are EQUIS-accredited. For example:

ESG UQAM, Ecole des Sciences de la Gestion, Université du Québec à Montréal
Faculté des Sciences de l'Administration, Université Laval
Faculty of Business Administration, Simon Fraser University
Faculty of Business, University of Victoria
    HEC Montréal
Queen's School of Business, Queen's University
Richard Ivey School of Business, The University of Western Ontario
Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia
Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa

Of these, Université Laval, Simon Fraser University, HEC Montréal, Queen's University, University of British Columbia and the University of Ottawa additionally hold AACSB accreditation.

Of these, HEC Montréal, Queen's University and the University of Ottawa hold AMBA accreditation of their MBA programs.

So, HEC Montréal, Queen's University and the University of Ottawa are TRIPLE ACCREDITED.

But this leaves Université du Québec à Montréal, University of Victoria and the University of Western Ontario that are ONLY EQUIS-accredited. These are not light weight schools. For whatever reason they chose EQUIS accreditation as their primary accreditation at this stage.

I see EQUIS and AACSB very comparable in many ways. Of course there are many more AACSB schools, but there are some huge name business schools that are EQUIS accredited.

I would suggest that graduation from an EQUIS-accredited school would be just as good outside the United States (i.e. Canada, European Union) as AACSB, however, inside the United States, AACSB is more recognised. I would also suggest that schools that are already EQUIS-accredited will probably move to AACSB in due course.

Here is an update regarding Ecricome straight from AACSB:

Thank you for your inquiry. Though the program does involve collaboration with business schools who hold AACSB accreditation, the degree granted by ECRICOME cannot be identified as accredited by AACSB as the institution granting the degree is not accredited by AACSB. The school may state it collaborates with a number of schools in support of this program and identify those schools that hold AACSB accreditation, but our accreditation cannot be extended to this program as we have never reviewed the school or the program.
