"Why are you putting CalSouthern/Scups/NCU all in the same group?"

    http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=scups&tld=edu

    http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=calsouthern&tld=edu

    http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=ncu&tld=edu

They also share staff. I don't see anything wrong with this. I was concerned in the past. However, Calsoutherns partnership and relationship with NCU can benefit students overall. I believe it is an cost effective strategy and I support it.

    "What does NCU misinform about?"

    For example;

The NCU Ph.D / MBA dual degree program and the Psychopharmacology
program ( now you see it now you don't and back again :D ). In the past, I enquired about the educational impact concentration at NCU ( http://www.educationalimpact.com/graduate-northcentral.html ). I was informed that I did not have to be an educator. In Summer of 2004, I enquired about NCU's masters degree program and financial aid program. I was told that a downpayment of 50 percent was required. Odd. More questions were asked and the staff member was ambigous and redirected me to answering machines. This brought up red flags. I decided to pay out of pocket. Then the financial aid debacle began.

Robbie: "...there was a time that Dr. Bear hated SCUps for lack of a better term for something that was done a long time ago with advertising, back in the 80's I think. But, I believe Dr. Bear has let that old thorne go and has moved on."

Well, yes and no. It was in the 80s, but the statute of limitations on my feeling grumpy about someone counterfeiting my book to make me say wonderful things about their own school and bad things about their competitors is a long one . . . especially when there was no hint of an apology in several subsequent long talks with Dr. Hecht.

Through the glory of the internet, the bad things people say and write about SCUPS (and you and me and everything else under the sun) will be available forever (like the Chronicle of Higher Education article on how SCUPS was one of the five US schools called a 'diploma mill' and banned by the government of Thailand).

When a potential employer (etc.) does an internet search, and finds bad stuff as well as good, how is he/she easily going to separate things out, especially when there may be many other applicants with other degrees? I guess that's a main reason I wouldn't choose a school with lots of baggage.

That's probably why formerly dreadful schools that got better and changed their name often don't mention the former name. I was recently rereading the devastating New York Times article, from the 70s, on California Western University, and appreciating why California Coast University does not, as far as I know, mention their former name in their literature.

I certainly don't fret about these matters every day, or go out of my way to bad mouth them, but when the topic comes up, I may chime in from time to time. And so I have.

    hi Rich

I do apologize for my abruptness and referring to you as an a-hole. I can be one too. We all can be. Yes, you did hit a nerve with the one liner about diploma mills changing names. I do hold an interest in Southerncal now. And I am glad they changed their name to help in ridding it of some of the old baggage. The old administration/owners are gone and new ones are in place. So I can't see why the school continues to be repressed. I do think that Southerncal will be going for accreditation in the next few months. The change in the requirements for Psy D and the DBA are no reflective of what the DETC requires (60 hours). I have a friend who recently graduated from SCUPS and I honestly can say that I liked the program and what it has to offer.

Anyway, apologies for crossing the line. Not very adult like or professional.

    Not sought, but accepted.

I have no interest in anything SCUPS does, but would--generically--hope that all such schools would seek recognized accreditation.

    Good luck with your experiences.

Raristud, you're on a roll. Randell must now be satisfied with your answer ;)

Hello friend. May the force be with you. It was not my intention to be on a roll. Just responding to Randell's questions. I believe that NCU and Calsouthern has it's strengths and weaknesses just like any other accredited college and university. I believe that if CalSouthern applies for accreditation, they will have success. I try to be balanced and discuss the flaws and potential of many organizations. In my opinion, Management and Organizational Development are interesting subjects. I conclude my ranting :)

Perhaps. But I know (not "believe") they're oh-for-one on that score. (Oh-for-two if you count the fact that the owner had to open a new school in Arizona to get it accredited.)

I would welcome it, but I'm not sure there is any reason to believe they'll be more successful in another run. And do we know they plan to take another shot at it?

If you have a Bachelor's degree from SCUPS can you enter a Master's program at NCU?

hello guys - and yep i am shamed faced at my attack on Rich - again, apologies to all of you for that childish outburst.

Rich - SCUps/CalSouthern is supposedly going for accreditation again. When? The admin is tight lipped. Part of the changes they have made to their programs are gearing up for the new education codes that California is implementing under the new dept. And, if you read through the proposed legislation, the ed codes in CA are going to be very strict and if a school meets those standards, then they should have no problems gaining accreditation from the DETC. I applaud the state's new codes. Hopefully, the new dept. will totally enforce the codes.

And, I agree there should be some reference to the previous name. It will make employers crazy trying to figure out what happened to SCUps unless the name change is on a resume or application.

I will keep you guys posted on how the course stack up compared to my other graduate courses. Vinnie, what did you think about the courses you took with SCUPS?

Yes, I believe so; that is how I understand the NCU admissions policy.

As I understand it, NCU does allow students with a Bachelor's degree from SCUPS into their graduate degree programs, but only on a conditional basis. One of the conditions being that such students would have to pass each of the first few courses in their program with a B grade or better in order to be fully accepted.

The proper way to reference the degree on a resume would be:

DBA, California Southern University (fka Southern California University for Professional Studies)
