Does anyone have any knowledge of the London Institute of Applied Research, referred in the second to last paragraph? I may be interested in obtaining an honorary doctorate. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

    Good luck.

You might want to get a copy of Bear's Guide, where such matters (L.I.A.R. in particular and honorary degrees in general) are discussed.

If not an honorary degree, perhaps an Ethiopian ear picker?

Hi James - I'd be happy to send you an Honorary Doctorate. However, the color cartridge on my inkjet has just run out so it will have to be all in black lettering. Let's talk about school names. Have any favorites?

By the power vested in me that I just made up as I'm going along, I hereby grant thee the degree of 91 Degrees Fereinheit (Honoris Causa), with all the honors, privileges, and esteem pertaining thereto, et cetera, ad nauseam.

    Congratulations on your achievement.

Would you like an honorary degree from Burlap University?

Jones was quite a prolific writer on the problem of degree mills in the UK circa early to mid 70's. I have managed to obtain all of the articles for my doctoral research. Sadly, nothing has changed re-the plight of the UK being a haven for mills since that time (see the THES today).

    Cheers,

    George

Have you noticed yet that the abbreviation for London Institute for Applied Research is LIAR?

Re: Re: Honoris Causa - or call me doctor

It's a red herring, which is why some of us treated it as nonsense.

Anyone who has any idea what L.I.A.R. was, also knows better than that poster let on. A dead, 30-year-old effort to do a little fundraising that isn't to be found anywhere but on DL discussion fora? Please. The poster knows already exactly what he/she is talking about. Hence the "red herring" comment.

In the cited article, Jones claims that LIAR generated over US $50,000 in turnover for Bear and Campbell.

John - how was this figure calculated, or, made up?

    Cheers,

    George

By "the poster," I meant the originator of this thread, not Ted (whom I was answering). Ted is hardly a "red herring" kinda poster, quite the opposite, as any reader knows. But I might have left the wrong impression with the shortcut nature of my post.

Actually, after I sent you that PM asking which poster threw the red herring, it occurred to me that my own post could have been misinterpreted as a slam on Dr. John Bear. To clarify, the poster (meaning Ted Heiks) knew the following factoids both from having owned and read every edition of Bears' Guide since the 9th edition (published in 1985 though, in my case, acquired used in 1992) and from previous participation on online-college.info. Yes, I was aware that Dr. Bear created the London Institute for Applied Research to sell honorary doctorates as part of a fundraising effort to start a legitimate school and that when the effort apparently didn't raise quite enough money, the remaining London Institute for Applied Research diplomas were sold in exchange for some amount of Ethiopian ear-pickers. While I was a participant at online-college.info, some individual, 25 years after the fact, stormed onto said forum and said some extremely nasty things about Dr. Bear. It seemed as if said individual somehow didn't realize that a $25 honorary doctorate (which John sold explicitly as honorary) was not quite the same as an earned doctorate from a legitimate, accredited institution. I think that Dr. Bear likely has enough intelligence and enough of a sense of humor to have realized when he created the thing that the initials for London Institute for Applied Research spell out LIAR . At any rate, in no way was the LIAR comment meant to disparage the reputation of Dr. John Bear.

The couple of thousand dollars that LIAR took in went to the British Association for Gifted Children, Yehudi Menuhin, Chairman. Campbell and Bear made $0. Lyndon Jones, who wrote so much on degree mills, became a good friend and colleague once he understood what we were doing and had a good laugh about it.

I do have some Millard Fillmore Institute ornate diplomas left over from the 1960s, and will gladly send an honorary doctorate to James T if he will provide me with his full name and mailing address, and evidence that he has given $25 to the tax exempt charity of his choice. He should make contact directly at [email protected]

Do you have a list of approved charities? Or was said offer just for James T?

Thanks John. I must seek out the one you 'conferred' on me after our first meeting at your local train station.

    Cheers,

Honorary degree awards seem to be a very good business similar to degrees of SRU! It seems much better because such degree awards expressively sell to customers without coursework.

Almost everyone can afford to pay $25! The no. of customers should be really uncountable!

Yeah right, James. You drag up a 31 year-old article that happens to mention L.I.A.R. and you post this question on this particular forum.

Don't you have anything consrtuctive to do?

    Juris Doctorates from L.I.A.R.?

I have a question. Was L.I.A.R. as you call it, ever used to issue Juris Doctorates? Please see the attached link. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

    In a word, No!

Mr. T., since you are undoubtedly entirely familiar with the whole Ethiopian earpicker episode, endlessly described in my books and elsewhere, you clearly appreciate that LIAR never did anything remotely real-sounding (surely not JD), and that after I traded a few hundred sheets of fake parchment for 1,000 earpickers, I had no control over what may have been done under the LIAR name.

Is there anything else about my life 33 years ago that you'd like to know?
