I think this is one of those cultural things. The way I saw it WillMake didn´t try to discourage her; he was just expressing awe at what he thinks it will be a difficult task. I am aware that this is not the standard behaviour in these fora, but there is no need to get aggraviated. He meant well. So let there be peace. :p

Mom of five, I am sure you´ll make it. It seems that you have carefully planned everything. I think your positive attitude against obstacles will motivate others here. Best of lucks, and I hope you enjoy the process.

Thanks God. Someone here who displays some WISDOM, not just witty displays of words.

You can do it. I did it being a single parent of one. We all have to start somewhere, which includes English 101 and Math 101. Take it one step at a time and you will be great.

I have been reading the board for quite a while now. Some of the postings here finally made me register.

Listen to your heart and go for the gold!!!

OK, so if you meant well it is also clear that your expression of this good will was widely misinterpreted (meaning that it was poorly worded). Perhaps you'd like to try again?

(By the way, M5, I personally believe that you're setting a great example to everyone on this forum and, more importantly, to your children. You have my admiration, respect and best wishes.)

  5. Good for you mother of five; great pick. That is a high-quality university.

With your actions, your kids will be very proud of you. You are a great example that always is possible.

Forever, and until the end of time, it is possible. Always believe in yourself.

    Just ignore the naysayers, Mom...

I don't buy the 'he was trying to help' or the 'he was in awe' line, either. Sounded like a negative note to me, too.

We can't help it that some men can't multitask! I'm a single mother of two with a 50+ hour a week job and a couple of very active and involved kids who always need to be at opposite ends of the county at the same time, but we make it somehow, AND I am going to school, too. It's not easy, but neither are any of the other challenges we have undertaken in our lives. One mom to another, I have GREAT CONFIDENCE in you.

You're already a natural, since you've got to have multitasking down to an art with 5 children! We already know that some (emphasis on the 'some' here, guys, this certainly wasn't aimed at all of you) men can't multitask. Maybe Mr. Naysayer is just one of those guys.

Kudos to you, Mom...you WILL Make it...without question!

    Mary

    Alas, cracking the oysters again!

Another bejeweled presentation to a porcine poster.

First class. I had to show this one around.
    Thanks, Unk!

But who knows?, perhaps my post was the most useful in this thread.

The corny stuff is alright, but it's nice to also speak from one's own real experience.

There. Some more food for your:
Pride, Arrogance and Intolerance, if you are still hungry.

    Mom of 5,

    I am suitably impressed.

I am planning to start studying an DL MBA shortly, and my wife and I have also decided to start trying for our first child, and I have been having the odd second thought about wisdom of the MBA.

You have certainly helped provide evidence of what I knew all along, that we can all do what we aspire to, as long as we put in enough effort.

Do let us all know how you are getting get on.

    YUM!

    Arrogance? Pride? Like this..?

You are the master and I must bow at your feet to learn such arrogance. I'm trying. Thanks for the compliment though.

Well, Dave, try this on for size, as a third thought, if you will: If you're going to be having a kid here soon, you will need an increase in income. Go for that MBA, now! - Ted.

    Thanks

I really appreciate the vote of confidence given to me. I do plan on checking in from time to time to let you all know how everything is going. School will be out in 9 days for my children, so hopefully I can really get a head start on my courses. Financial aid at this school has a 12 hour rule, where a student (even distance learning students) must take 12 hours each semester (which is 15 weeks long). So, I am taking 4 courses this semester. I have a schedule, which I try to live by. I try to dedicate a day each week to each individual subject. I began my classes on April 27th and so far, have completed a minimum of a lesson for each course. The courses have from 6 to 9 lessons each. So, as you can imagine, I dedicate any time I can to reading and completing each lesson plan. You all are the greatest !!!! Thanks again.

Agreed. While it will certainly be a challenge with five kids, many people have succeeded with equal or greater challenges.

    I wish her the best.

    Ted,

I am sure you are correct, although money is not my main motivation. I left school at 16 and rose through the ranks the hard way. Now in management, I need to validate my position in some way with a respected business qualification.

    Plus I love a challenge!

Anyway, not to get side-tracked, Mom of 5 , you are the star of the moment here!

It sounds like you are well prepared so I am sure you will succeed.

Make some good memories – you might need them some day...

    All the best,

    Dave C.

    Re: Thanks

Wow, Mom of 5! You certainly do have a lot on your plate! But go for it! I am a Dad of zero, so I can't really speak to the issue of family responsibilities. But I do love school, as I have two MBAs and am working on an MA in Civil War Studies and it is always good to see someone improving themselves.

You know, those kids could be turned into quite a research department...

Again, best of luck to you and congratulations. You are why DL matters.

Not to hijack this thread, but what classes are you taking Ted?
I have three great Civil War books for you to read, if you have not been assigned them.

Forged in Battle- Joe Glatthaar- tough in class and a great writer. This professor worked me until I was bone tired. I am disheartened that he is leaving UH for UNC, but what can you do.
A Short History of Reconstruction- Eric Foner- amazing book and great lecturer. He is at Columbia. You can download his lectures online.
The Fireaters- Eric Walther- Great book and great professor. He is the chair of the graduate committee at UH and an all around great person.
Race and Reconstruction- Very good book- Deals with the Civil War in terms after the shooting stopped and the memorials started. He is at Yale.
The Impending Crisis- 1848-1861- Probably the standard bearer of pre-civil war studies.

To momof5, good luck with your studies. If someone such as myself can do it, you certainly can.
