Silly question, but is there a such thing as a Doctorate (PhD) in Philosophy? I know you can earn a Bachelors and Masters, but a Doctorate?
Whoa! Ok, I see. The funny thing is, I see you guys talk about PhD's all the time, but never mentioned a PhD in Philosophy. I actually thought there was no such thing, taking it from the actual name of a PhD.
Yes, Ph. Ds in philosophy certainly exist. I would say that most philosophy depts would offer them. Perhaps just as confusing is the Master of Philosophy. Some Australian universities offer them as a research degree in many fields in place of the MA which is often a course work degree now. By the same token I have had to explain that my Master of Letters doesn't have anything to do with writing letters on occassions.
It seems that the link has changed due to the merger. You may need to poke around in the site to find it again.
They may not offer it any longer. This is the only thing I see: Distance Learning, Courses, Home, ; University of Wales Trinity Saint David Distance Learning MA Ancient History and Classical Studies MA Ancient Myth and Society MA Ancient Narrative Literature MA Anthrozoology MA Arthurian Studies MA Biblical Interpretation MA Celtic Christianity MA in Celtic Studies MA Classical Language and Literature MA Classics MA Cultural Astronomy and Astrology MA Culture and Society: China and West MA Death Studies MA Environmental Anthropology MA Ethics of Life and Death, The MA European Philosophy MA Indian Religions MA Islamic Studies MA Medical Ethics MA Monastic Studies MA Nature MA Philosophical Studies MA Religious Experience MA Social Anthropology MA Theology MA The World's Religions MMin Master of Ministry MTh Church History MTh Orthodox Studies MTh Systematic and Philosophical Theology Dip/Cert Greek Dip/Cert Latin PG Cert Technology Enhanced Learning DMin Doctor of Ministry PhD Applied Archaeology
One note about Trinity St David's distance courses, they are quite expensive for non-European students!
You would think that in this day and age that kind of petty crap (European/non-European) would have long been relegated to the dust bin of history.
You're right, they clearly don't offer it any more. Sorry for the misdirection. Here's an alternative: Unisa Online - Discipline of Philosophy
Actually if you poke around at the website you will see that they offer Ph.D. degrees but because this is a British University they refer to them as research doctorates. The MA level courses are called post-graduate courses because they involve classwork/modules. See the following sections that describe research degrees including part time external degrees (distance learning) Research Opportunities, Courses; University of Wales Trinity Saint David
