Hello All. I am approximately ½ through my MSM at a B&M University (Ohio Dominican University) and interested in pursuing a doctorate when I am finished. I had searched the forums here, and had decided on NCU for the doctorate. Not so sure about that now. In fact, if I am to start the doctorate degree next year NCU is a scratch. I have looked at TUI, Argosy, Capella, and Walden. (Nova will not work because of distance to closest extension). I am afraid that I am missing some important options. I would like the learned advice from you all. My Bottom Line: Degree: PhD / DBA -- Management End Game: I want to eventually retire from my corporate job to Teach at a small college/university. Important Components: Flexibility (I will still have to work full time) Cost (Not a Huge consideration, but if I can achieve my goals at a TUI price, I would prefer that over a Walden price) Residencies (These are ok, as long as they are not excessive) I will very much appreciate any opinions, advice, thoughts, suggestions, emotional outbursts, etc. ~ Eric

What do you want to study and research? Business is a big field. While a general DBA coupled with a specific research dissertation might do you just fine, you might also consider a program with a designation besides the DBA (or Ph.D.) that might be better aligned with your interests. Oh, and don't forget the Doctor of Management option at such schools as U. of Phoenix and University of Maryland University College.
A friend of mine just asked me a similar question. He's looking for a distance DBA/PhD (in management) without cost as an issue but has concerns about residencies (works full-time including nights and weekends; is fine with residencies as long as they're in Los Angeles, CA). Is anyone here familiar with a program that might work? Outside of Baker, I know that Argosy University has an "online" program (it's really a blended program, not a full-fledged online one), but they require students to go to Chicago for the residencies and won't even allow them to do the residence part on their Santa Monica campus...
Let's not forget Heriot-Watt.. The Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt has a number of interesting options for the DBA. You may want to check it out.
Given that your sig refers to poverty, is the tuition rate of the institution a factor here? Also, it's an inconvenient truth that most of the schools that have online or low residency doctorates are viewed with skepticism by many in higher education. Thus, if your goal is a faculty position you may want to consider asking the opinion of deans or department chairs at the sorts of schools where you'd want to work. Good luck, -=Steve=-
Thank you for your thoughts. Thank you all for the replies. I have looked at most of the suggestions. To answer a few questions and make a specific call out or two: I have not yet figured out exactly what I would like to research. I have a few ideas, but nothing that compels me to carve it in stone. I am indeed open to a DM and have looked at the UMUC offering. I hate to say that money is not a factor at all, but the "Right School" will trump money as a factor. The skepticism that you mention is exactly my concerned. I believe doing a little research as you suggest is in order. I think so far that I am leaning towards Capella’s PhD in Organization and Management with a specialization in Project Management. I like the program (if not the price), I do project management for a living and like the subject (not to mention having any number of burning questions that could be translated into a dissertation subject), and I believe Capella’s graduates have had some success in obtaining faculty positions. That said, I think more research is in order. Again, thank you all for your thoughts. ~Eric
Have a look at the open university in the UK.http://www.open.ac.uk/research/research-degrees/index.php
How about the Australian B&M schools that offer online DBA options? http://www.gradschool.com.au/programs/docBusPost2005/ - Lucozade
In addition to Oz, check out the South African offerings such as those offered via the University of South Africa (UNISA). Very reasonable tuition and the doctorates are dissertation only (you will most likely need to go to S.A. for your defense). UNISA offers a number of DA (Doctor of Administration) degrees, including: a DA in Business Administration. If you decide to enroll, visit the IACI website (you can also check out programme and tuition info on this site). Dr. Esselen makes the enrollment process much easier than going through UNISA directly. Good luck! - Tom
Also have a look at this DBA offered via RDI for US$ 19,819.2883 converted. http://www.rdi.co.uk/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse1&category_id=1&Itemid=70&vmcchk=1&Itemid=70 As far as I am aware no restriction from where you can apply.
