Re: I hate quality time, or, be still my soul.

I was just doing that last night; it's my specialty.

We were taking our friend out to dinner (the one who's the subject of this thread) and our five children seemed to be working on a fair-to-midland circus routine, or at least it seemed to me. I hissed at them: "Would you kids be quiet, the people didn't come to this restaurant to hear your nonsense, etc etc ,ad naseum, ad infinitum, ad astra." My wife looked over and informed me that the scene I was making was far worse than that of the kids.

Have to admit it, she was right. Were you by any chance eating in a Chinese restaurant in Eastern kansas last night?

A mastiff error on my part.

    From what derives 'cyno'?

And what's wrong with people whose children are cats and dogs?

    Greek kynos or kunos, "dog"

    Similarly, lycomorphic (wolflike), not lupomorphic.

Since -morphize verbs are based on the greek morphe, or form, you need the Greek rather than Latin word to make the first part. Latin would give you canimorphic, but canimorphic is macaronic. If you're not a 17th century Lutheran theologian, macaronic formations are unbecoming; if you are, they're merely unendurable for your readers.

Nothing per se, just so long as they don't start thinking they actually are their children; so long as they keep their wits about them.

I have no fundamental problem with animals. We have a cat that the kids generally use as a toy (I know, it's horrible). The boys like to pretend the cat's the bad guy when they play superhero (and if we're not careful to monitor the situation, the cats ends up on the bottom of a pile of little boys); the girls treat cats like they're a little doll. Kitty doesn't particularly like being dressed up like a ballerina and taught first position, second, etc, but kitty understands that's the price you've got to pay if you want free food and a fresh litter box around here.

Hey, the kids beat the daylights out of me and the wife as well.

This, roughly translated, means "as long as they substantially agree with me."

There are a large and growing number of people who do not subscribe to the ideals of "speciesism," that is, the idea that you can do anything to any living entity as long as it is not of your own species. I do not expect that others will accept another philosophy but such philosophies do exist and are the predominany beliefs in most Eastern religions. Here's a Western Philosophical version:

What exactly are you getting at? I'm nonplussed.

Please tell me your bone of contention and I'll tell you if my thread--which is meant to be about 80% entertainment--has anything whatever to do with something that should be offensive to you.

    I'm all ears.

Me too. That was a sad day when he hung up the pen and ink. I hoped against hope it was just a publicity scheme. But alas, no.

Do you mean this whole thread is the result with your obsession with and revulsion of animals' BUTTS?!!

I've got enough of a problem worrying about my own butt.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Why Do People Without Kids Talk Incessantly Aboput Their Dogs?

I made my comment in what I thought was a fairly mild manner. Your response, while not totally surprising, has only confirmed my earlier suspicion that you see animals as objects. Also, you seem to believe that because you started this thread as "entertainment" that this means that you can say anything you want without question or confrontation. I am simply trying to point out to you that your attitude toward animals is not shared by many, many, many people and the fact that you do not understand this does not, by definition make them all wrong. In your original posting in this thread you described an acquaintance of yours who has clearly accomplished much in her life yet you have decided that she is somehow wacky or just wrong about this issue of animals. Have you ever considered the idea that your inability to understand this issue is really your own deficit? That you are the wacky one? I provided you a link to one of the premier philosophers in the world and their ideas about animal rights. Did you read it? No, I didn't think so.
As for the second part of your above quotation, you pretend to be able to tell me how I should feel. You say, that if I tell you what is bothering me then you'll tell me whether I should be offended. I don't think that you've got the inside track on whether I'm offended or not. I think that I am perfectly capable of telling you whether I've been offended and I don't require any assistance from you in that task.
    How's that for entertainment?

Uh, oh. This thread certainly took an interesting turn just now, didn't it.

I love being nearby on the sidelines for these moments.

Let's watch, now, everyone... shall we?

I have both children AND cats. Both groups are adult.

It's hard to explain the fascination I have with the cats. The KIDS I can take or leave...;) but the CATS really MATTER!

Really, although I am at least as insufferable as any other pet lover, I plead "not guilty" to considering my cats as substitute children. I can tell the difference. The kids are the ones always asking for money...

The thing about a cat is that the relationship is very much one of apparent equality. The cat will accept or reject you as it sees fit. Not so dogs; they slobber at you not matter what you do. Disgusting; I could never keep a dog. Besides, they drink from the TOILET.

Of course, MY Dana is clearly the intellectual superior of any other cat I've ever met...why, just the other day, she...

Dana? If I had a cat I'd name it Ntwydmala (He who greets with fire) after the lion in this amazing video.
