No, I don't think that it's a conspiracy. It's just herd instinct.

Frankly, I don't know what your game is, Lerner. And I don't really care very much. In my opinion it's the hysterical flames that seem to follow every one of your posts and the resulting angry back-and-forths on multiple threads that are really damaging this board.

They seem to think that you are a troll. But what's forgotten is that trolls only succeed when they can provoke child-like responses. In my opinion the answer is easy: just act like an adult.

My concern is this:

Degreeinfo has started to be modestly influential in the battle against degree mills. It's read by news reporters, government officials and professional educators. It has the potential of becoming sort of the site of record on mill matters.

Where alse can people go to read breaking news, to find informed and multi-faceted comment about questioned institutions, or to actually read no-holds-barred back-and-forth discussions with their owners and reps? Where else are the newest developments in degreemill-science such as the back-doors into 'GAAP', even recognized, let alone discussed?

That's threatened when threads like Galanga's reports on the SRU investigation are taken over by child-like ego-battles and flame wars. Degreeinfo's credibility starts to drop towards zero and the thoughtful people just turn and walk away. We are already seeing that happening and it serves no one's interest but the mills'.

I really wish that those who enjoy ego-battling would respect the board and take it elsewhere. Alternatively, I wish that the moderators would issue some warnings and if necessary ban the perpetrators.

 

I really wish that someone who enjoys flooding degreeinfo with garbage and doubletalk would NOT succeed in getting responsible posters arguing over him. I'm seeing to it that I get my wish: Bill, Steve, I refuse to get drawn into a "let's you and him fight" scenario. Nothing would gratify Lerner more. I am completely unpersuaded by what you said, but that detracts from my high regard for you two just as little as it raises my low regard for Lerner. If you would like the last word on him/them, go ahead.

I'd like to make a few points here. First, Bill's statement above is fairly insulting all by itself. If nothing else Bill, isn't it just a matter of you belonging to a different herd? Aren't you just following along inside a different group?

I think of this board as being a lot like a newspaper. There's lots of information on many subject. There are many points of view. There's hard news and there's soft news. There are editorials and there are also the comic strips.

There's room for it all Bill. Don't get so hung up on being "influential." It's all ego, right?

I agree 100%.

I try to stay away from these kinds of threads because it is the same old crap. In my eyes even though lerner looks to be at least sympathetic to some less than wonderful schools, his attackers look worse than he does. Why is it that anyone that post on this site from a different perspective can be called a liar, fraud, troll, and shill and the ones that do the name calling are NEVER called down? Those that attack the messenger rather than the content of the message are the same no matter which forum they gather at.
