The Mallinson Institute for Science Education at Western Michigan University offers a PhD in Science Education available online. The title is in Science Education, as opposed to, e.g., Curriculum and Instruction with concentration in Science Education.

Optional concentrations are available in several specific science disciplines: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geosciences, Physical Geography, and Physics. For each of these concentrations, a master's degree in the respective discipline is required.

A PhD in Science Education with no further concentration is also available with a broader admission requirement: "A master’s degree in a science discipline, science education, or education with a science emphasis."

The program is intended to prepare for roles including college science teacher, K-12 science specialist, and discipline-based education researcher.
