Almost everyone considers, rightly or wrongly, a PhD to be the pinnacle of knowledge for a given field. While most other terminal degrees, are commonly viewed as practitioner degrees and not equivalent. One could list a disclaimer or an explanation, that they are in fact equivalent... but with a PhD... no explanation is required, which speaks volumes. Even when another terminal degree may be arguably more appropriate for a given position, such as a faculty member, it's still commonly viewed as a less competitive degree. Such is life.
