It seems that basically every school offers an MBA. Also if the school offers online degrees, an MBA is one of them.

I understand that we live in a business driven society and cash is king, but are there really that many people out there working in the business field that need an MBA? It seems like the market is way too saturated with these MBA programs. Are they really that many people going for MBAs? Do that many people really need MBAs? Why does our society seem to put so much value on MBA programs?

I have an MBA and I don't work in the business field. I do teach 3 business courses though. I see doctors, lawyers, and other professionals with MBAs. One of my criminal justice professors said in his bio recently that he plans to get an MBA someday. He already has his Ph.D. It's a versatile degree. I think people just like MBAs for no reason lol.

Like I said on another thread, the more MBAs we have, the more options people will have.

Your answer kind of asks the same questions I have. Why are so many people getting MBAs? I agree that the more people go for MBAs the more options they will have, but I just don't understand how this degree became the "go-to" masters.

Business administration is the most popular undergraduate major, but I think it's popular for different reasons. The MBA is seen as the general management degree that's supposed to teach people how to run a business or organization. The MPA is designed for non-profits and the public sector, but the MBA is seen as being more flexible, so even government and non-profit employees prefer the MBA.

Schools are going to offer what's in demand. Do we really need 500,000 more people with undergraduate degrees in business administration, psychology, and criminal justice? No, but schools don't care. Prospective students need to take some responsibility for researching the job market.

At this point, few degrees aren't overdone. The MBA is just one of many.
