At least they cannot outsource PC tech jobs! unless they want to ship the pc's internationally and have them back in a week or two

That is true but how much can you make as a PC tech. Management is the way to go. Business manageers are/will be needed to manage all the outsourcing.

If you can't change the world, at least you can see the trends coming and get ahead of the curve.

I’m a 36 year old GS-13 Chief Technical Officer (CTO)

Hello Firstmode4c my name is Vonnell I’m a 36 year old GS-13 Chief Technical Officer (CTO) working for a major military installation in Japan. I oversee an extremely large network of government computer systems. My bachelor is in Information Technology and the master degree that I’m working towards is in Information System Security.

I started as a PC technician and progressed up from there. I also did the MCSE a while back but it's not as prominent as it use to be. This board is a great tool, positive and negative so please research the posts and weigh them accordingly for yourself.

I have been in Japan for nine years and plan to remain here for a few more. Accomplishing my master’s degree in system security will be used to enhance my chances for a GS-14 or GS-15 position in my future. I have only been working with the federal government for three years, prior to that I was in the Navy as an Information Technologist for 12 years.

Japan is a wonderful place to visit and I encourage everyone to visit one day. Minus the earthquakes =)

    My experience

I have been working in IT for about 13 years, and I am feeling very burned out (I do helpdesk/desktop support). I like the challenge of IT, I enjoy researching problems and coming up with solutions, but I feel that I could be doing so much more. I have always had an interest in the medical field, and would love to combine that interest with computing, but am not certain how. Medical informatics, or Health Information Technology sound interesting, but I haven't found a good path to getting there.

Most days I find myself very busy, so it doesn't bother me, but there are those other days I dread coming into work. I also have a 1 hour drive each way to work (prior to this job, I had been out of work for 6 months). That's the other problem with IT, job security. I've been the victim of two layoffs, and the company I currently work for is seeing some challenging times ahead (my manager tells me I won't be laid off, but I know from experience that managers generally have no power when the hammer comes down).

I don't feel like I can get overly involved with the people or the systems because of the ever-present worry of being laid-off. I am currently keeping my eyes open for a more challenging/interesting job closer to home while finishing up my degree in IT.

    *sigh*

    Thanks...

I must have come up with it on one of my "good" IT days. Today is certainly not one of them! My nickname probably would have been BurnedOutInCT. ;)

Currently I am an IT Helpdesk Associate for a Surgical Clinic, my first IT job. A Helpdesk is great place to start in IT I've heard.

I started in Help Desk myself. Still on one, but with a different company.

About 10 years of I.T. experience.

B.S. is in Computer Info Systems, M.S. in Info Technology Management. 2 years in software development/maintenance, 2 years of software test/QA (those 4 years in the Air Force), 2 years as an App Support Analyst, last 4 years as an Oracle DBA.

I'm totally burned out, and would give my 2 weeks tomorrow if there was another field I could make comparable money in...I would (seriously, not sarcasm) drive an 18 wheeler if I weren't married w/kids. Not liking the industry much at all right now.
