I have to disagree with the point regarding the PhD or other doctoral title. Many consultants I know use the title on their business card because it directly relates to their consultancy practice (or a when being hired as an industry expert by the government). But I know at least one NASA official who uses MBA on his business card. I guess he wants to be seen as different from all the engineers...:D

It looks to me like just more persnickity politics. If you earned the degree, and your proud of the degree, what is the problem with displaying the credential after your name? Particularly those with doctoral credentials spend the better part of a decade earning those letters at the begining (Dr.) or the end (PhD) of their name. I certainly don't think that post nominals are necessary for personal emails or casual letters, but I certainly wouldn't attempt to JUDGE a person based on how they write their name.

Stanford MBA or no, I do smell a hint of sour grapes on this one. Though we may never know exactly why that is, its not like you have to be inside the bakery to smell the buns in the oven.

Our Chief Technical Officer is the only one in our engineering group with a PhD, and we never see him use it. Even during presentations we never see him list the PhD next to his name, even though he got it from a well known B&M university (he also used to be a professor). It took me six months of working here before I learned why. He has a PhD in astronomy, and he doesn't want our customers to confuse him with an engineering PhD by putting it after his name. I think he has a valid point...

I love articles like that. The topic comes up on LinkedIn all of the time.

There's nothing like an executive of a well-known company saying "Hey, I prejudge and mind-read people all of the time."

So someone putting MBA behind their name would cause Marc Effron to throw away their resume without bothering to check their other credentials, skills or experience and he's proud of that. He's proud to say that he'd routinely look over potentially capable candidates for his company because of a style issue and not something important.

Good job, Marc! I'm sure your bosses are proud of you to be quoted in a magazine article with your foot in your mouth.

How much of a gaffe is it to say something inane and be quoted next to your company?

By the way, I looked him up. He wrote a HR text in 2003. But that's the only mention I could find of him. My guess is he likes to be quoted. My other guess is that if he really practices what he preaches in that article, he's lame and I wouldn't want to work for him.
