But hold on ... what does "accredited" mean in a libertarian system?

If degree mills are completely free to operate, doesn't that mean that accreditation mills are completely free to operate as well?

Of course, there are accreditation mills today. But they don't have the same status as the "legit" accreditors, because they don't have recognition from the US Dept. of Education. In a libertarian system, presumably that would change -- no accreditor would get any recognition from federal or state government agencies. So WASC and ACI would have the same legal status -- just as Stanford University and MUST University would have the same legal status.

So who would determine the legitimacy of an accreditation agency? You suggest CHEA, which is a non-governmental association of legit accreditation agencies, as an "accreditor of accreditors". But wouldn't bogus associations of bogus accreditation agencies be equally free to operate ?

It means that you as an individual are free to make your own decisions about academic legitimacy and the accreditors who report on it and act accordingly. Yes, accreditation mills may arise (just like they do anyway, as it turns out) but it's not hard to decide which ones are legitimate and which are not. In a free system like that, could it be that some people think that some accreditor is "for real" and other people disagree? Sure, but we already see that with the whole RA vs. NA situation and the barn hasn't burned down yet.

I just don't buy it that some centralized authority needs to tell everyone what to think about academic legitimacy in order for some sort of equilibrium to be reached concerning recognition of credit and credentials in higher education. Reputation tracking is a really easy thing to handle privately.
